Another View: Newton Center reality not reflected in recent coverage

Reports about maggots found on a patient don't show true picture of a great facility.

I am writing in response to recent publicity that cast negative and disparaging light on the Newton Center Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sanford.

My husband has been a patient in the rehabilitation wing at the center since March. For more than 20 years, my son received care at three different brain injury and skilled-nursing facilities.

As a family member who has advocated for quality care for my loved ones for many years, I have a deep appreciation for the invaluable service that health-care facilities provide. The Newton Center in Sanford truly measures up to meeting the individual needs of its residents.

The administration quickly addresses issues that arise and efficiently provides for the well-being of both residents and families. Many staff members go the "extra mile" in getting to know residents.

My experience with seven different facilities over a period of nearly 30 years has taught me that no facility is perfect. Staffing shortages and lack of financial resources are common problems that all facilities face. Patient rights and refusal of services can also prevent staff from giving the level of care that the facility provides.

When it comes to daily care and treatment, the Newton Center is right up there with the best of facilities. The nursing staff, CNAs and therapists exhibit a high degree of professionalism, expertise and a genuine attitude of caring.

The facility is clean and well-maintained, and staff is diligent in protecting the overall health of all residents.

We are blessed to be a part of this facility as my husband continues his recovery through the skills, services and TLC of the Newton Center staff. The old saying "don't judge a book by its cover" can be applied here: Don't judge the Newton Center by "coverage" recently given by the media.
