I’m writing in support of the RSU 21 proposal for voters to pass a bond resolution to raise $74.8 million to finance the renovation of our high school, the Kennebunkport Consolidated School and the Mildred L. Day School in Arundel.
The condition of these three schools is deplorable, unsafe and not close to the building code standards of today. We must now pay the price for the “Band-Aid” approach to school repairs that has been in place for far too many years.
The bite on our taxpayers is not inconsiderable. However, it’s imperative that we muster the courage to accept the planned tax increases associated with the renovation plans.
These renovations will provide the children of our communities with safe and modern educational facilities that we all can be proud of. New facilities will greatly enhance our property values and allow the Kennebunks and Arundel to continue to be the attractive communities that we currently enjoy.
The School Committee, who we have elected, as well as several building committees, have worked hundreds of hours over the past three years to put together this comprehensive plan. I urge your support Jan. 21.
