The shortest letter in a recent Press Herald carried the most potent of messages (“Letter to the editor: Put plovers in a zoo and give us humans our beaches back,” April 19).

It is not worth repeating the author’s name here, as her pitiful opinion is one to be embarrassed by instead of being proud of.

To be so shallow as to suggest that we round up the piping plovers and place them in zoos for their protection is a disgrace to all of us.

These tiny birds are but a small sample of an ecosystem that has been violated time and time again by us humans.

From huge oil spills to air pollution that is disrupting life in entire countries, we continue to insult this planet and the creatures who inhabit it. They have not the control to fight back nor the ability to understand.

If anything, the person who wrote that letter needs to be on display as a hopefully vanishing species herself.

As a one-time cartoon strip character once said, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”
