I am sure that there are many responsible cyclists out there who adhere to the “rules of the road” when traveling on Maine’s highways and byways (“Maine Voices: Clash between driver, cyclist spotlights need to review rules of the road,” June 9).
Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure of meeting many of them because they seem to be in the minority.
Most cyclists I run into (no pun intended) seem to think that they only have to follow the rules when it benefits them.
They don’t stop at posted signs. They blow right through when they see a gap and the cars are many. They ride between lanes of cars on occasion to get ahead when they don’t want to wait in line like the rest of us.
Waiting at the intersection for the light to change?
Not so much.
Staying “as far to the right as practicable”?
They must have missed that paragraph in the suggested rules.
Of course, my favorite is that after having their way with those of us in cars who can only drive on the actual road, they breeze by and give us all a finger salute.
