Another View: Workers' comp insurer could be role model for health coverage

By PETER SIMMONS

Thank you for your editorial on MEMIC as a successful insurance model ("Our View: Workers' comp history shows that divided government can work," March 24).

As an employer, I can attest to its success. Because it is a mutual company, all of its members benefit -- in healthier workplaces, reduced rates and year-end rebates -- when injury claims decline. It's a simple formula -- the incentives directly correlate to the benefits.

Perhaps our current legislators, divided as they are, could apply this model now to health insurance.

If they were to create a similar state-regulated, private mutual health insurance corporation that could bring down health insurance rates and foster a healthier population -- as has happened in the workers' comp domain -- they'd be celebrated as heroes.
