Quarry expert to speak

Stephen Haynes, director of the Maine Granite Industry Museum on Mount Desert, will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Camden Public Library, 55 Main St.

Haynes will talk about the granite industry in the quarries of Knox County, including notable quarries in St. George, South Thomaston, Tenants Harbor, Vinalhaven, Hurricane Island and Muscle Ridge Plantation.

Holiday lunch for seniors

Cumberland County seniors are invited to attend the annual Cumberland County Triad Thanksgiving luncheon, planned for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Camp Sunshine facility, located on Acadia Road, just off Route 302 and Point Sebago Road in Casco.

Members of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and police services volunteers will serve a traditional Thanksgiving feast, including turkey with all the trimmings.

The meal is free and open to all Cumberland Country seniors.

Protect pets from rabies

Oral history workshop

The Yarmouth History Center, along with Oral History and Folklife Research Inc., will offer a “Giving Voice to History” oral history workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 118 East Elm St.

The workshop will be advanced by a talk, headed by Keith Ludden and Molly Graham, at 7 p.m. Thursday to introduce the goals and concepts of oral history and the importance of giving voice to members of our communities.

Oral history is an effective means of capturing a history that cannot be found in traditional historical records.

The recorded interviews can be archived and preserved for future researchers.

Some of the topics to be covered in this workshop will include: definitions and goals of an oral history; setting up a project, including what equipment is needed; interviewing skills; practice interviews, and how to interview family members.

The cost is $10 for members of the Yarmouth Historical Society and $15 for all others.

Students who are involved in oral history projects will be allowed to participate at no charge with advance notice.

Old House Course on tap

A Fall Old House Field Course will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday for those who have an old house, want an old house or just love old houses.

This fall’s Old House Field Course begins with a classroom session at the Knox Community Center, 61 Park St. Subsequent sessions will take place at the old homes of participants who wish to open the doors of their homes to class members and let them participate in an instructional walk through their home led by old house expert and course instructor Les Fossel.

A “Make a Hat, Help the Homeless” workshop will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Dyer Library at 371 Main St.

Help seniors ward off falls

Spectrum Generations is seeking volunteers to coach falling prevention classes in Waldo County as part of the “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls” programs designed to help older adults manage concerns about falls and increase physical activity.

The eight-hour coach training is free, and materials are provided.

Coaches help participants become more confident about managing falls by helping them find ways to reduce falls, and to protect themselves if they do fall.

Coaches must be able to lead low-level exercises to help increase strength and balance and have good communication and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, dependability and a willingness to lead small groups of older adults.

The next training will be held at Spectrum Generations Waldo Community Center located at 18 Merriam Road from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 28 and 29.

Write a better college essay

The Portland Public Library Teen Center will present a free college essay writing workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

This free workshop is being offered to help high school seniors develop and refine their admissions essays.

Telling Room staff, led by program director Nick Schuller, a college admissions expert and former UC Berkeley admissions reader, will be available to provide one-on-one attention for students from local high schools.

Leaf-bag pickup scheduled

The town will begin its annual fall leaf bag collection program Friday with a curbside pickup scheduled to begin at 7 a.m.

Additional collection dates for the leaf bags are Nov. 8, 15 and 22.

Leaf bags are available in quantities of 15 per Falmouth resident (while supplies last), and can be obtained at the Public Works Building at 101 Woods Road.

Leaf bags are for leaves only; please do not put brush in the leaf bags.

Brush is not collected curbside but it is accepted at the Transfer Station.

Drug Take Back coming up

A countywide Drug Take Back initiative will be held at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at select locales around York County.

The community service, sponsored by the Northern York County Prescription Drug Coalition, allows community members to dispose of expired or unused prescription medications in a safe location. Items to be accepted include over-the-counter or veterinary pills, drops and ointments.

Individuals are asked to remove personal identifying infomation from the labels.

Not eligible for drop-off are thermometers, batteries, or durable medical equipment; intravenous solutions, injectables, or syringes; and illicit substances.

Drop-offs will be accepted at the following locations: Public Works Recycling Center, 371 Hill St., Biddeford; Community Center, Franklin Street, Saco; New Police Station, 16 E.
