New roof for library

Historic Deering Mansion, a 114-year-old Main Street landmark, is in need of a new roof.

Built in 1869 as the home of the Joseph Deering family, the stately mansion has been home to the Dyer Library since 1955 – after being donated by former board president Frank C. Deering.

Library officials were seeking to raise $80,000 for the project. Now, thanks to a generous grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, just $30,000 is needed.

To raise those funds, the library is selling its historic roof slates for $10 apiece.

Those interested in owning a piece of Saco history are invited to drop by the library to purchase one of the roofing tiles.

The library is located at 371 Main St.
