LASER SHOWS: The full dome Sky Laser System returns to the Southworth Planetarium, at 70 Falmouth Road, for the final presentations this year, from April 12-21.

Planned omni-dome laser events Friday include Electrolaze, a new techno/dance laser show, at 7 p.m. and Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon at 8 p.m.

Saturday shows will include Laser Orion at 1 p.m., Laser Perseus and Andromeda at 3 p.m., Laser Beatles at 7 p.m. and Laser Pink Floyd’s The Wall at 8 p.m.

Sunday shows will feature Laser Perseus and Andromeda at 1 p.m. and Laser Orion at 3 p.m.

AFRICA TALK: Janet Littlefield will talk about her travels to Africa and the founding of the Go! Malawi nonprofit at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Room 3 of the Portland Public Library.

Go! Malawi is a small nonprofit based out of Hebron that offers trips to Malawi to help native peoples address issues facing developing countries.

Littlefield founded the organization in 1998 as a means to help Malawi girls gain an education in a rural area where there is no free public secondary school.

She will detail volunteer opportunities there as well as upcoming trips interested participants can tag along on this June and July.

PLANT AND TROUT SALE: Orders are now being accepted for the Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District’s Spring Plant and Trout Stocking sales, set for May 4 and 5 at Union Fairgrounds.

The plant sale list is available online at www.knox-lincoln.org/spring-plant-sale and includes a selection of bareroot fruit trees and berries; conifers; native and native-friendly trees and shrubs for landscaping, wildlife and conservation, as well as Maine-grown native perennials and herbs in 1 gallon pots from Rebel Hill Farm. With one or two exceptions, all plants are hardy to at least Zone 4 and all have been chosen for pest and disease resistance, wildlife value (including beneficial insects), a variety of soil and light conditions and to span the season from spring through fall.

This year’s plant sale runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 4 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 5, with pre-ordered trout pickup set for noon on May 5.

Brook and rainbow trout, for stocking private ponds, will be available to those who have a valid permit from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Trout order forms and permit applications are available at www.knox-lincoln.org/trout-sale/ and pre-ordered fish will be packed in plastic bags with oxygenated water for the journey to your pond.

All plants are available for pre-order and cash and carry sales on a first-come, first-served basis.

BLUEGRASS WORKSHOPS: Musicians Phil and Ellen LaClaire will offer three playing and performing bluegrass workshops, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Chestnut Street Baptist Church at 29 Chestnut St.

Attendees should bring their guitars, banjos or basses to the sessions to learn bluegrass and acoustic roots music.

HOSPICE TRAINING: VNA Home Health Hospice will offer hospice volunteer training for individuals who wish to assist teams in bringing comfort to individuals and families facing a terminal illness.
The 20-hour training is intended to educate on companionship, caregiver respite and practical, non-medical help to support terminally ill hospice clients.

The sessions will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 30, May 2, May 7 and May 9; and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 4 and May 11. All sessions are at the VNA Home Health Hospice at 50 Foden Road.
