New cemetery website

The town’s parks and public works department recently launched a new cemetery website that provides important historical information.

The content on the site was collected and assembled by the Falmouth Historical Society, the Falmouth Memorial Library, and the town’s parks and public works department. The site includes photographs, locations and burial information.

Fundraising campaign

A fundraising campaign has started in New Gloucester to help fund its proposed veterans monument, “Thank You to All Who Have Served.”

The monument will list the names of nearly 900 residents who served their country in the armed forces.

The monument campaign is co-sponsored by the Lunn-Hunnewell Amvets Post 6 and the New Gloucester Historical Society.

Junior Achievement officers

Junior Achievement of Maine recently elected the following officers on its board of directors. 
Darren J. Hurlburt, president and chief executive officer of Maine Education Services, was elected chairman of the board.

Guy Langevin, vice president of human resources and organizational development at Dead River Company, was named vice chairman. 

Jeffrey Laniewski, vice president of Synernet, Inc., was elected past chairman.

Paul Clancy, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Diversified Communications, was named treasurer.

Scott Twitchell, vice president and practice group leader of TD Insurance, was named secretary.

New trustees at Cheverus

Cheverus High School elected five new members to its board of trustees. 

Derek Broaddus is a 1992 graduate of Cheverus. Broaddus, of New Jersey, is the senior vice president and national excess casualty manager for Allied World Assurance Company in New York.
Susan Campbell, of Cumberland, is the chief student success officer at the University of Southern Maine.

Edward Haley previously served a six-year term on the board from 2005 to 2011. Haley, of Cape Elizabeth, is an account manager for Hewlett Packard.

The Rev. Joseph O’Keefe, S.J., taught foreign language at Cheverus from 1980 to 1983. He then served on the board of trustees from 1984 to 1990. He is currently serving as a trustee at Loyola University/New Orleans and Marquette University.

Walter Pochebit is a 1977 graduate of Cheverus High School. He currently serves as director of construction and property management for Maine Medical Center.

Conservation award

The Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District named the Scarborough Land Trust as its 2012 Outstanding Conservation Cooperator.

To date, the land trust has conserved over 1,000 acres in fee and easements from properties along the Scarborough Marsh to upland acres that feature open fields, woods, rivers, streams and farmland.

New Conservation Corps team leader

Kevin Kirby of Portland joined the Maine Conservation Corps as an assistant team leader and AmeriCorps volunteer for the summer season. 

Kirby is the son of Terence Kirby of Portland. Last year, he served with the MCC as a team member.

Credit unions raise hunger awarness

The Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger recently held its 8th Annual ‘Share the Bread’ event to Raise Hunger Awareness.

Last month, Maine’s Credit Unions donated a loaf of bread and $17,000 to 33 hunger organizations across the state, with food pantries in all 16 counties receiving contributions. Each food pantry received $500. The Good Shepherd Food-Bank received received $1,000.

The event was started to raise awareness to the issue of hunger in Maine, and the need for food for Maine’s 65,000 school children during summer vacation.
