Driver safety class

An AARP driver safety class for people age 50 years old and older will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 20 at the AARP state office, 1685 Congress St.

The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for others. In July and August, the cost is $5 per person for educators, active or retired. The deadline to register is July 16. Extra classes will be held on Aug. 17 and Sept. 16 in Portland.

African correspondent talk

Richard Valdmanis, deputy chief correspondent for Reuters’ West and Central Africa bureau, will give a talk at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Scarborough Public Library, 48 Gorham Road.

Valdmanis is based in Reuters’ Dakar bureau, where he has helped lead coverage of two dozen countries in West and Central Africa since September 2009. He previously ran Reuters’ energy coverage in the Americas as a senior editor based in New York.

The program is free and open to the public.

Marrett House evening tour

A Twilight Tour of the 1789 Marrett House, 40 Ossippee Trail East, Route 25, will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Tours begin at 5 and 6 p.m.

Reservations are required, and space is limited.

Admission is $5 for Historic New England members; $10 for all others.

BRIDGTON

Quilt show

Chickadee Quilters 33rd Annual Quilt Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Stevens Brook Elementary School on Frances Bell Drive.

There will be quilts on display, vendors, auction table, raffle and refreshments.

Admission is by a suggested donation of $5.

KEZAR FALLS

Self-guided garden tour

A self-guided garden tour of 11 private gardens in the Kezar Falls, Parsonsfield and Porter area will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, including views of Rhonda and Rick Sanborn’s award-winning perennial gardens photographed for articles in Down East Magazine and Birds and Bloom.  

Advance tickets and tour maps are available for $12 if purchased by Friday at Kezar Falls Hardware on Route 25 (625-4579) or Village Jewelers on Route 25 in Cornish (625-8958).

Tour day tickets and maps are $15 and may be purchased from 10 to 11 a.m. at Riverside United Methodist Church, located at routes 25 and 160.

NORTH PARSONSFIELD

Victorian Tea at Par Sem

The Eighth Annual Victorian Tea at Par Sem will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the 1832 Parsonsfield Seminary building in Route l60.

Victorian victuals and teas will be served. Harpist Jane Wilcox Hively will peform. And a Queen Victoria impersonator will attend.

Advance tickets are $15 or $20 at the door.

Proceeds will benefit The Friends of Par Sem restoration.

UNION

Author talk

Donn Fendler, author of the book “Lost on a Mountain in Maine” will speak at the next meeting of the Union Historical Society at 7 p.m. at the Old Town House on Town House Road.

Fendler will detail his nine-days of surviving the Mount Katahdin wilderness in 1939 at age 12.

The program is free and open to the public.
