HANNAH REED, 15, a home-schooled student, served as an honorary page in the Maine Senate on May 3, an event that turned out to be a family work day.

Reed served with Sen. David Trahan, R-Waldoboro, and her brother Zachary Reed, who is a member of the Maine Senate Chamber staff. The Reeds’ father, the Rev. Michael Reed, delivered the prayer that opened the Senate session that morning.

WELLS HIGH SCHOOL student athletes Ben Durfee and Vanya Tomaszewski have been selected by Principal Jim Daly to receive the 2011 Western Maine Conference’s Citizenship Award.

Each year, two senior athletes are picked from schools in the Western Maine Conference area that includes York, Cumberland, Oxford and Androscoggin counties. Durfee and Tomaszewski were honored recently at the Western Maine Conference awards ceremony.

SPRINGVALE PUBLIC LIBRARY received a $1,000 donation from the Law Offices of Joe Bornstein to benefit a Future Access Technology Sponsorship program to provide public access to Internet services. BUXTON

SHANE MYERS, 20, of Buxton has completed the third leg of a four-leg work intensive for the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps. Myers and a 10-member AmeriCorps team recently finished an eight-week assignment at White Oak Lake State Park in Nevada County, Ark.

Myers will finish his AmeriCorps commitment with a nine-week assignment working with the Southwest Conservation Corps in Tucson, Ariz. For details, go to www.americorps.gov/nccc.

THE WELLS-OGUNQUIT Community School District is one of fewer than 400 school districts in the nation being honored by the College Board with a place on its AP Achievement List for opening Advanced Placement classroom doors to a significantly broader pool of students, while maintaining or improving the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher.

From 2008 to 2010, the district increased the number of students participating in AP from 159 to 193 students, while improving the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher from 57 percent in 2008 to 66 percent in 2010.

BRUNSWICK

FIVE SENIOR high school students were honored as Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens by the Topsham-Brunswick DAR Chapter.

They include Charles Oddleifson of Morse High School, Brittany Cost of Brunswick High School, David Thomas of Mt. Ararat High School, Allison Fuehrer of Freeport High School and Benjamin Nickerson of Yarmouth High School. Those students were considered standouts for displaying the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

Nickerson also was named the chapter’s Good Citizen. He now advances to the state DAR competition for a chance to advance to the final National Society competition.

THE SANFORD HIGH School Interact Club has been collecting crutches, walkers and wheelchairs to benefit the global organization Crutches For Africa. Those mobility aid items will be donated to victims of polio in Tanzania and Kenya. The SHS interact Club is the youth-sponsored club of the Sanford Rotary Club.

THE BALLPARK recently was recognized as the Maine Recreation and Park Association’s Facility of Merit award winner. The award recognizes a Maine recreation facility, established or re-established within the past two years, that demonstrates innovation, creativity and an increase in local recreational opportunities for diverse users.

Once the home turf of the minor league AAA baseball team the Maine Guides and later a performing arts venue, the 6,300-seat property, now owned by the town, sat idle for 15 years. It was adopted and renovated by a volunteer work force two years ago using $300,000 in donated funds, materials and labor.

The Ballpark is now home to the Raging Tide, a New England Collegiate Baseball League team. The venue will host nearly 100 games and events this summer.
