WHILE STATIONED in Afghanistan, Capt. Jeff Whitten’s unit received nearly 3,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies that were sent by several Maine troops. Earlier this month, he presented the Girl Scouts of Maine with a mosaic of the American Flag and an actual flag that flew over the unit’s compound. Girl Scouts of Maine Chief Executive Officer Joan McDonald accepted the award on the Girl Scouts of Maine’s behalf.

SCARBOROUGH

THE MIDDLE SCHOOL Mentorship program for girls in math and science, now in its 14th year, encourages sixth grade girls in both subjects. Volunteers who work in a math or science field mentor a student throughout the year. The program also includes field trips to University of Southern Maine School of Engineering, IDEXX, WGME weather .

PORTLAND

THE DONATO J. TRAMUTO Foundation recently gave $5,000 to the Frannie Peabody Center, Maine’s largest HIV/AIDS service organization, providing prevention services for at-risk groups and direct services for people living with HIV/AIDS, including housing and food assistance. Patti Capouch, executive director, said this award signals that the foundation has taken the lead in spreading awareness that HIV has not ended and services for Mainers are still needed.

 

KIDS FIRST is seeking morning volunteers for the center’s four-hour co-parenting program. Receptionist duties are from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, with each volunteer committing four to six sessions a year. Responsibilities include checking in clients, setting up coffee and doughnuts, distributing booklets and certificates and cleaning up after the program. THE MAINE GARLIC Project, a collaborative effort between the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Aroostook Farm, and is seeking volunteers to grow and study the crop. Participants will be asked to pay a $5 to receive a garlic bulb in the mail in August, along with planting instructions and data collection information. BIDDEFORD

SOUTHERN MAINE MEDICAL Center hosted a dedication event for a fountain within the Auxiliary Healing Garden in memory of E. Ruth Bibber. The fountain was chosen by the Bibber family, of Kennebunk, and purchased through donations made by friends and family. The hospital’s president and chief executive officer recognized E. Ruth Bibber’s volunteer efforts at the hospital during the ceremony, which drew about 70 people. The fountain was blessed by Rev. Carolyn Lambert just before it was turned on and an inscription reads, “May this fountain bring peace and healing waters to all those who pass by.”

 

THE ALTRUSA International Club of Greater Biddeford-Saco recently donated $1,430 to the Altrusa International’s CLUB 21, which supports a healthy summer experience for children with AIDS or HIV. Safe Haven Camps are located in North Carolina and more recently on Martha’s Vineyard. The money was raised through a silent auction of 24 custom made nautical themed centerpieces used at the Altrusa International’s District 1 Conference held at the Holiday Inn West in Westbrook. The club also participated in the York County Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society raised more than $5,000.

BRUNSWICK

MARYBETH NOONAN of Raymond was crowned The 2010 Miss Maine’s Outstanding Teen June 19. Noonan, daughter of Tom and Jane Noonan, sang “What I Did for Love” from “A Chorus Line.” She will now represent Maine in Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant in Orlando, Fla. at the end of August.

THE MASSABESIC LIONS Club, Fraternal Lodge No. 55, served a ham dinner to raise money for a matching grant of $25,000 received by the Alfred Elementary School Parent Teacher Club. The dinner’s proceeds totaled $1,000 and the Lions Club will make up the difference to get the fund off to a good start.

DURING THE ELEMENTARY School’s fifth grade graduation ceremony, Janice Staples was recognized for 34 years of services to RSU 57. She started working as secretary for all six elementary schools when the district was MSAD 57, including the towns of Alfred, Waterboro, Newfield, Shapleigh, Lyman and Limerick. In 1985, she assumed the secretarial position at the Alfred Elementary School, where she has worked for the past 15 years. She is retiring from the district

CAMP SUNSHINE has reached the halfway point in a $250,000 challenge issued by the JTG Foundation. The challenge is to help the camp kick off its next 25 years of service, matching all 2010 gifts of $25,000 and above, up to $250,000. As of last week, the camp had raised $125,000. Camp Sunshine provides a family vacation for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families free of charge. This matching donation will endow 20 family sponsorship funds in perpetuity.

KENNEBUNK

THE EDUCATION FOUNDATION of the Kennebunks and Arundel has financed 13 student and professional development programs for the 2010-2011 school year totaling more than $36,000.
