SCARBOROUGH

A COLLECTION of 70 resource books designed to meet the needs of English language learners and adults with low literacy skills was acquired by the Scarborough Public Library. The collection features workbooks, manuals and resources. Similar materials will also be available at the public libraries in Portland, South Portland and Westbrook.The materials were purchased by Literacy Volunteers, Greater Portland through a grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation.

DAVID NOONES recently was honored with the FAA Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award recognizing his flight safety record of flying more than 50 years with no accidents or violations. Noones was presented with the award on May 28, during his 75th birthday celebration at the York Golf and Tennis Club. Noones is still working, still teaches flying and still flies his own airplane.

YARMOUTH

NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY students raised more than $600 to help students at L’Ecole Saint-Joseph school in Dubre, Haiti, buy uniforms for their soccer team. They earned about $400 through a fundraiser in which they paid to be allowed to dress casually, and a middle school parent kicked in an additional $200 to help purchase uniforms for an entire team.The uniforms were made and purchased in Haiti.

WELLS

KATE MACOLINI, a Wells Junior High School seventh-grader, has won first place in the Rebecca Emery Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest “Our Flag? What It Means to Me.” Macolini’s work bested 43 other entries. She now advances to the state level of the competition.

PORTLAND

PEOPLE’S REGIONAL Opportunity Program is accepting applications from men and women 55 years-old and older who are interested in volunteering for its Foster Grandparent Program. Participants would volunteer in classrooms under the guidance of teachers in schools and child development centers throughout York and Cumberland County. ERIC ANDREASEN, a Portland native, was awarded a summer internship at Sen. Susan Collins office in Washington, D.C. “Eric’s academic profile, background, and strong work ethic will be a great asset to my office,” said Collins said in a press release. “During Eric’s internship he will be able to learn the inner dynamics of a congressional office by experiencing it first-hand. I welcome Eric to my staff.” Andreasen is a senior at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, majoring in political science and North American studies.

THE PORTLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY will begin its summer reading program Monday. This year’s theme is I Love Reading in Portland. The program runs for seven weeks, starting Monday and finishing July 30. Participants can sign up at any library branch. For more information, go to www.portlandlibrary.com.

THE METRO and South Portland Bus Service is offering children and teenagers a free ride when they borrow a book at their local public library. Children and teens, ages 18 and younger, can receive one free ticket per visit at the following library locations:

FALMOUTH

STUDENTS at Falmouth High School recently spent the day volunteering at Riding To The Top Therapeutic Riding Center in Windham. Seniors Tommy Bazarian, Brian Beasley, Diogo Correia, Lynzee Gillis and Lexi Pauls joined Dave Horne, a riding center volunteer, to repair and install new features to the “sensory trail,” which allows clients to develop their senses through activities that involve touch, sound and sight.

The Riding To The Top Therapeutic Riding Center helps people with disabilities reach their highest potential through the healing power of horses.

THE BOOK SHED, 27 Staples St., is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays this month. Hours are weather permitting.
