Hattie Simon, a Thornton Academy junior, has won a U.S. Department of State scholarship to study Arabic in Morocco.

The Ski Maine Association board of directors elected the following new officers for 2013 and 2014 at their recent annual meeting: President Dana Bullen, president and general manager at Sunday River, Newry; Vice President Kevin Rosenberg, general manager at Mount Abram, Greenwood; Secretary Linc Hayes, co-owner of Lost Valley, Auburn; and Treasurer Bill “Fitzy” Fitzgerald, mountain manager at Camden Snow Bowl, Camden.

Ski Maine Association is the nonprofit trade group representing the alpine and nordic ski industry in Maine.

Renovations for island post

The American Legion Randall-MacVane Post 142 will get some needed renovations this week to increase energy efficiency and enhance accessibility, thanks to The Home Depot® Foundation, and in observance of the 69th anniversary of the World War II D-Day invasion of Normandy.

About 100 Team Depot volunteer associates from the Home Depot Portland and the North Windham stores will do the work Thursday. It will include replacing old single-pane windows with energy-efficient vinyl windows; renovating worn flooring, ceiling tiles, lighting, stairs and landings to accommodate a future ramp, and installing an outdoor patio and grilling area to better facilitate community events.

Major funding and support for this initiative is provided through The Home Depot® Foundation as part of its focus on Doing More For Veterans. Architectural design is provided by Grant Hays Associates, general contracting by Pete Chase, Pat Myatt and Dave Roma; and walkway and patio installation by Coastal Lawn Care.

Literature winner for Maine

Lyman Moore Middle School student Lauren Paradise was awarded first place in Maine in her age group in the Letters about Literature program sponsored by the Library of Congress.

Representatives from the Maine Humanities Council will present Lauren with recognition and $100. For more details, go to www.read/gov/letters.

Poetry festival winners

Falmouth senior Emma Sapat earned the top prize for her poem, “Shakespeare’s Villains in Middle School,” at the Merriconeag Poetry Festival.

Two Merriconeag students, senior Teagan Wu and junior Carlin Tindall, placed second and third.

The finalists read their winning poems and received gift certificates donated, in part, by Longfellow Books in Portland.

The festival was the culmination of events that began in January, when students from more than 40 public and private schools were invited to submit their poetry. Students from 14 area schools sent in works for consideration.

Health knowledge shared

Thirty-five Noble High School students came together for Global Youth Service Day recently to log 502 hours of brainstorming, researching and presenting for a youth-to-youth Wellness Fair at Noble Middle School.

The presentation combined the energy of youth perspective with relevant health and wellness information. Topics ranged from sun safety and stress management to the health benefits of working with or owning animals.

Booths featured interactive components or the opportunity to share personal experiences.

The event was organized by high school students in the Jobs for Maine’s Graduates program, their specialist Jeff Kaste, an independent group of underclassmen and the SAD 60 Community Engagement Center.

Part of the Semester of Service allowed for students to learn about teamwork, time management and public speaking as well as to gain extensive knowledge on their health focus.

SACO

Language scholarship winner

Hattie Simon of Saco has been awarded a National Security Language Initiative for Youth Scholarship for 2013-14.

Funded by the U.S. Department of State, the program affords selected students an opportunity to study less commonly taught languages in overseas immersion programs. Simon, a Thornton Academy junior, will study Arabic in Morocco this summer.

Students win contest honors

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap announced the winners of the 2013 Maine Constitution Essay and Poster Contest.

The contest asked students in 6th grade and up to submit essays, while younger students submitted posters reflecting Maine symbols or history.

Sarah Pastio, an 8th grader at Windsor Elementary School, received top honors for the junior high division for her essay on the Maine Constitution, while Mary Farnkof, a Scarborough High School freshman, placed first for her essay on the importance of voting and democracy.

Poster contest winners included third-grader Scout Nasse from Jameson Elementary School in Old Orchard Beach and fifth-grader Colton Parsons of Ridgeview Community School in Dexter.

Winning students and their classmates are invited to view the state’s original 1820 Constitution at the Maine State Archives in Augusta.

Arts night spotlights talents

A Visual and Performing Arts Night was held at Bonny Eagle Middle School recently to showcase artwork and dance, drama and music performances by SAD 6 students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The music programs included vocal and instrumental ensembles from Bonny Eagle High School, middle school band and chorus students and 5th-grade all-district band and chorus students.

There were also musical presentations by theater arts students at Bonny Eagle Middle School and Bonny Eagle High School.

Dirigo delegates chosen

The 2013 Dirigo delegates from Bonny Eagle High School have been announced.

Boys State delegates include Samuel Clift, Dustin Cole, Joshua Conley, Brian Rollins and Devin Thistlewood, with Andrew Burnell serving as the team alternate.

Girls State delegates include Veronica Druchniak, Cassidy Merrill and Vanessa Verville, with Rebecca Moss, Kendyll Martin and Kelsey Sicard serving as team alternates.

Dirigo Boys State will be held at Thomas College in Waterville June 16 to June 20, and Girls State will be at Husson University in Bangor the same week.

Spring math meet held

Sixty-four students in grades 4 through 6, representing Buxton Center Elementary School, Hollis School, George E Jack School and Bonny Eagle Middle School recently participated in the SAD 6 Spring Math Meet at Buxton Center Elementary.

Fourth-grade winners included: arithmetic — Slade McCall, Fiona McCormick, Shane Cannon, Tayte Harris, Abel Sullivan, Mia Kovaks and Marlee Walker; geometry — Dylan Childs, Marlee Walker and Fiona McCormick; problem solving — Tyler Cawley, Slade McCall, Marlee Walker, Carter Gagnon, Elias LeBlanc, Iver A. Iverson, Ella Dunne and Zander Foster. Overall 4th-grade winners were Marlee Walker, Fiona McCormick and Abel Sullivan.

Fifth-grade winners included: arithmetic — Chloe Falkner, Aubrey Denico, Rachel London, Cameron Phinney, Ian Ruona, Jason Warren, Isaiah Wentworth and Ben Atkinson; geometry — Ian Ruona, Rachel London, Chloe Falkner and Lamaara Forrest; problem solving — Ben Atkinson, Lamaara Forest, Chloe Falkner, Lauren Jordan, Rachel London, Lewin Pillsbury, Ian Ruona and Jason Warren.
