High school students sought for Legion’s speech contest

The American Legion is looking for contestants to participate in its 2014 Constitutional Speech Contest.

High school students in grades 9-12, of public schools, private schools, parochial schools, military schools, charter schools and home-schooled are invited to participate in the 2014 American Legion National School Oratorical Scholarship Program, a constitutional speech contest.

The purpose of this program is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school age students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

The contest consists of the student making two presentations – an eight- to 10-minute original speech on some aspect of the Constitution with emphasis on the duties and obligations of a citizen to our government and a topic chosen by the American Legion, as defined in the 2014 official rules.

In addition to awards earned by the winners of the various elimination rounds of competitions at the American Legion post, district, and state levels, college scholarships of $18,000, $16,000 and $14,000 will be awarded to the first through third places in the national finals.

Each state winner who competes in the first round of the national final will receive a $1,500 scholarship. Participants in the second round who do not advance to the national finals round will receive an additional $1,500 scholarship.

Post level competitions will be held through December.

District level completion will be held in January 2014 with the state competition being held on Feb. 15.

Hannaford launches drive to help feed the hungry

Hannaford Supermarkets has launched a Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger charitable campaign to help feed the hungry in five states.

Hannaford is partnering with its customers in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York to provide food and monetary donations to local food pantries and regional food banks.

The Hannaford Helps Fight Hunger charitable campaign allows customers to purchase a box of food staples for $10, and choose whether to have the box delivered to a local pantry or to donate it personally.

Customers wishing to make a cash donation to the fund may do so in $5 increments at the register from Dec. 2 to Dec. 31.

And, beginning Nov. 24, the Buy One, Give One campaign will accept donations benefiting food banks, with Hannaford donating an identical product to the state or regional food bank for each item purchased by customers, from selected matching products.

Stores compete with one another to encourage donations, and those supermarkets with the highest level of giving receive additional cash donations from Hannaford to be contributed locally.

Joanne Marco selected as city’s Citizen of the Year

Several individuals were honored for their dedication to community and service at the 15th Annual Bath Citizen Involvement Day held at Waterfront Park recently.

This year, the city recognized former community development director Al Smith by renaming the Community Spirit Award “The Al Smith Community Spirit Award.”

Prior to his 2012 retirement, Smith was a dedicated 17-year employee who spent countless hours helping those in need and supporting grassroots community initiatives.

Smith created Citizen Involvement Day to help recognize individuals and projects that benefit the community, and to give non-profits a platform from which to spread the word of their mission and activities.

This year’s Citizen Involvement Day featured 39 area non-profit groups and organizations.

Joanne Marco was named Citizen of the Year for her longstanding dedication to the community.

Kevin Thibodeau was honored with the Youth Award for his thoughtful involvement and civic responsibility to promote the “Make Music, Save a Life” event benefiting the Maine Youth Suicide Prevention program.

The Fields For Our Future program, led by Kay Beveridge and Lu Lozano, received the Community Project Award for their efforts to raise more than $600,000 to install an artificial turf field at the Edward J. McMann Outdoor Athletic Complex this year.

And, Will Neilson received the Al Smith Community Spirit Award for his devotion to Bath and his committed involvement with numerous programs, including Bath Rotary, Main Street Bath and its Economic Restructuring Committee, the Bath Freight Shed, and his service as Chair of the Greater Bath Elder Outreach.

Kiwanis elects new officers, cites members for service

Scarborough Kiwanis Club recently held its ceremony to install officers for the coming year during a banquet at Dunstan School Restaurant.

Newly elected officers for the 2013/2014 year are: President Sherry Forest, President-Elect Ava Adams-Talley, Treasurer Fred Bustard, Secretary Sharon Binette and Assistant Secretary Joyce Leary-Clark

Adams-Talley and Robert Talley also were honored with “Kiwanian of the Year” awards for their many contributions and dedicated community service.
