Day trip to Rockland

Kennebunkport Parks & Recreation will offer an adult day trip to Farnsworth Museum of Rockland on Thursday.

Transportation is via bus, set to depart from 30 North St. at 10 a.m. with a stop at Moody’s Diner for lunch. Cost is $20 for the trip and attendees are responsible for their own lunch expenses.

Auction, antiques appraisal

The First People Plus Antiques Road Show & Live Auction will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the auction beginning at 4 p.m., Saturday at 35 Union St.

The morning event will feature antiques appraisals for $5 per item, and cider and doughnuts.

The live auction will include wine, cheese and a variety of auction items.

Proceeds raised will directly benefit the Volunteer Transportation Network to provide free rides for homebound residents.

Crafts fair seeks crafters

Crafters are being sought to participate in the annual Mid Coast Senior Health Center Crafts Fair to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter.

The fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 3 at 56 and 58 Baribeau Drive.

Tables are available to rent for $15 each.

Driver safety for seniors

Sign-ups are being taken through Nov. 2 for an AARP Driver Safety Class for drivers age 50 and older. The class is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 at the AARP Maine State Office, 1685 Congress St.

The registration fee will be waived for all military veterans and their dependents.

The registration fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for all others.

A Halloween party for dogs

Living Well workshops

Three six-week Living Well for Better Health workshops, designed to teach healthier alternatives for people with chronic conditions, will be held during November and December.

Electronic waste recycling

The First Congregational Church of Scarborough is sponsoring an electronic waste recycling event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the church parking lot, at 167 Black Point Road.

Maine is one of the few states that mandates electronic waste be recycled and properly disposed of, thus keeping tons of hazardous waste out of landfills and incinerators and helping to protect the environment.

Televisions, computers, cordless phones, VCRs-DVDs and other types of audio and electronic equipment will be accepted. No household appliances please.

Library holds ‘book blizzard’

The Laura E. Richards Library will advance its Oct. 31 seasonal closing date with a Blizzard Books Days event, running from 9:30 to noon Saturday and from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Oct. 30 and 31.

During those times, Georgetown residents are welcome to borrow as many books, DVDs, books-on-tape or CDs to get them through the winter. Those items are due back in May when the library reopens for the summer season.

SOUTH PORTLAND

Energy fair at SMCC

Southern Maine Community College will hold a Solar Power and Energy Efficiency Fair for Homeowners on from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Sustainability and Energy Alternative Center building at 62 Fort Road.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will teach homeowners how to make their homes more energy efficient and explore options for solar and other forms of renewable energy in Maine.

Experts and vendors will be on hand to teach participants more about energy audits, green building supplies and appliances, solar energy alternatives and financing options.

Jen Hatch from ReVision Energy will speak at 10 a.m. about solar energy for the home and Dana Fischer of Efficiency Maine will speak at 11 about rebates and financing for cost-effective renewable energy.

Scouts host Halloween night

Boy Scout Troop 875 of Standish will host a Haunted Halloween night on Saturday evening at Old Red Church at 55 Oak Hill Road.

Three time slots will be offered, starting with a family friendly showing at 4:30 p.m., followed by scarier events at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.

Guests will park at the Standish Congregational Church, where they will be guided to the Old Red Church. They will be returned to the parking lot by way of Howe Cemetery. Refreshments will be served immediately following.

Lots of doings at the library

York Public Library, at 15 Long Sands Road, will offer a number of events this week.

Tuesday events will include: A talk by local art teacher and children’s author/illustrator Linda Franklin, who will discuss her newly published Halloween book “Into the Pumpkin” from 4 to 5 p.m.; an evening of poetry at 6:30 p.m., facilitated by Priscilla Cookson; and Part 2 of a lecture by York resident and Astronomical Society of Northern New England Director Carl Gurtman at 7 p.m.

Health fair at flu shots

St. Andre Health Care will sponsor a community health fair and flu shot clinic from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at 407 Pool St.

The event will focus on maintaining wellness at any age and will include area health resources for information, hearing screenings and wellness demonstrations. There will also be raffles and light refreshments.

Wednesday is the reservation deadline to attend the Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District’s Annual Awards Banquet, slated for 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 at the Nobleboro Community Hall.

Every year at this event, the district recognizes individuals and organizations that have contributed in a significant way to local resource conservation efforts, either by adopting specific practices or by promoting activities that heighten awareness and concern for local conservation needs.
