Fundraiser to help cancer victims

A fundraiser for Lucy’s Love Bus youth cancer benefit, titled “Maine Loves Lucy,” will be held from noon to midnight Saturday at The Loft at 865 Forest Ave., offering live music and children’s activities from noon to 4 p.m., as well as face-painting, balloon animals, juggling and a coloring contest.

Lucy’s Love Bus was founded by Beecher Grogan in 2006 to provide free, integrative therapy opportunities for children being treated for cancer. Since then, the organization has served 90 young people in 14 states.

Benefitting from the organization’s Maine connection is Emily Gryskwics, 13, of Standish. Gryskwics, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in April, will receive free therapeutic horseback riding sessions when she is on a break from chemotherapy.

Church holding fair on Saturday

The Bountiful Fair of the Stevens Avenue Congregational Church will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 790 Stevens Ave.

Fair items will include crafts, jewelry, confections and baked goods, antiques, knitted items and basket raffles. Breakfast and lunch items also will be available for purchase.

 

Reserve space now for Nov. 10 fair

Table space reservations are being accepted for the Celtic Christmas Fair at the Maine Irish Heritage Center to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10, in conjunction with the third annual State Street Holiday Stroll.

Space is $40 per table.

Homeschooling seminar planned

“Teach Your Own: A Seminar About Homeschooling and Unschooling,” will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Author, teacher and publisher Patrick Farenga will head the session, addressing the needs of 21st century learners, such as the challenges of unschooling and homeschooling, how to create a support base and how to pursue college and alternatives to college.

Library plans Lego event

Kennebunk Free Library will host its monthly Legos Club for children ages six and older at 4 p.m. Tuesday at 112 Main St.

This session will include Halloween-themed builds such as haunted houses, monsters and scary items.

Students are invited to come in costume.

Opportunities to work together or alone are offered.

The library will provide Lego blocks. Children are requested to leave their own Legos at home.

Environmental documentary

E-waste and recycling day

Saco Bay Rotary Club will partner with the Saco Public Works Department and Waste Recycling Solutions to offer a electronics waste and recycling day for the general public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at 351 North St.

Household electronics such as televisions, DVD players, VCR’s, radios, stereos, microwave ovens, computers and peripherals, batteries, cell phones, game consoles and the like will be accepted.

Household appliances, white goods, Freon or mercury bearing items and fluorescent bulbs will not be accepted.

Dash donations are requested and appreciated.

French vacation is prize

A museum in France is assisting the Counting House Museum’s fundraiser by donating a six-day stay for two at its 900-year-old chateau, located four miles from Cannes.

A chance to win the vacation stay is just one of the items to be auctioned off at the Counting House’s 1960s Dance and Silent Auction, to be held at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at the American Legion Hall in Rollinsford, N.H.

Training for caregivers

Volunteers of America Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont is one of only four organizations nationwide offering Validation® Training for families and professionals with loved ones or clients who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. The training will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the Portland Marriott at Sable Oaks.

‘Dreaming of Wolves’ presentation

Author Alan Sparks will present a talk and slide show based on his book “Dreaming of Wolves: Adventures in the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Thomas Memorial Library at 6 Scott Dyer Road.

Part travelogue, part memoir, part natural and cultural history, the book presents a unique and thought-provoking story of adventure through a series of entertaining vignettes and informative essays about wolves.

Halloween Open House planned

The Lebanon Rescue Department will hold its ninth annual Halloween Open House from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Lebanon Central Station, located at 1524 Carl Broggi Highway, Route 202.

The event is free to all and will include hayrides, crafts tables where children can make masks and color Halloween crafts, a Monster Mud Truck, tours of emergency vehicles, safety giveaways and games for the kids.

Pumpkins will be available to the children while supplies last and they will be treated to candy and public safety education material.

There will be coffee and refreshments for the parents.

There also will be a nonperishable food collection drive to benefit families in need during the holidays.

Visit Elks Haunted House

The Sanford Elks Haunted House will be open from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at 13 Elm St.

The event will include free candy and information on the dangers of drugs.

Alternative activities will be offered for younger children, who may afraid to enter the Haunted House.

The Elks Pumpkin patch, located behind the Lodge, will offer free pumpkins while supplies last for children ages six and younger only. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Haunted House & Pumpkin patch is part of the Elks Drug Awareness Program.

 

Deadline set for couponing class

Thursday is the deadline to register for those wishing to participate in a super couponing class, to be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Cancer Care Center of York County, located off Route 109 in Sanford on Eagle Drive.

Three presentations of the Camden Conference presentation of “Adams vs. Jefferson: The Furious Election of 1800 — 100 Days in 100 Minutes,” with Mac Deford and Tom DeMarco, will be offered over the next week at three separate locales.

Session 1 will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Donald P. Corbett Hall, Room 100, University of Maine, Orono.

Session 2 will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Rockport Opera House.

And Session 3 will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at University of Maine’s Hutchinson Center in Belfast.
