St. Patrick’s parade

The Irish American Club of Maine will hold its annual St. Patrick’s Day parade at noon Sunday, with appearances by Claddagh Mohr and Dunlop pipe bands, the Maine State Police Emerald Society, Girl Scouts, the Boys and Girls Club, Maine Gaelic Sports Alliance, the Stillson School of Irish Dance and Mayor Michael Brennan.

The parade will begin at the Fish Pier on Commercial Street and proceed toward the State Pier for final presentations.

‘Sea Smoke’ author talk

Teen Tech Week at library

Patten Free Library, at 33 Summer St., will host two events for teens this week as part of Teen Tech Week 2013.

Teen Tech Week is a national initiative aimed at teens, their parents, educators and other concerned adults to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of technologies, especially those offered through libraries.

From 2:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, teens will have the opportunity to use the library’s six iPads to learn about the photography features and apps to make photo collages, comics and other publications. The iPads will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. A librarian will be available to assist students as needed.

At 3:30 p.m. Thursday, teens are invited to a Just Dance 4 session. A Wii game console will be set up in the second floor Community Room; the game, which involves following dance moves set to popular music, will be projected on the library’s movie screen.

Blanket-making event

Project Linus of Cumberland and York counties will sponsor a Blanket Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the South Portland Recreational Center.

Flannel quilt kits and hands-on instructions will be provided for attendees, who need basic sewing machine skills and a machine in good working order.

Project Linus is a nonprofit organization that provides handmade blankets to children who are seriously ill or in crisis.

Cancer care events

The Cancer Care Center of York County is celebrating its seventh year with three events this month.

At noon Wednesday, Melanie Cogan, N/P, Maine Center for Cancer Medicine, Cancer Care Center of York County, will offer “Living with Late and Long Term Effects of Cancer Treatment,” a survivorship program.

At noon March 21, Gina Mosher, OTR/L, rehabilitation manager at Goodall Hospital, will lead the talk “Energy Conservation: Doing More with Less,” a discussion on a variety of ways to conserve bodily energy.

And from 2 to 4 p.m. March 25, a trained volunteer cosmetologist will offer the program, “Look Good Feel Better,” offering advice to cancer patients on coping with skin changes and hair loss, as well as make-up techniques, skin care and wigs to help those undergoing treatments for cancer to feel better about how they look.

Waban Telethon on Saturday

The 42nd annual Waban Telethon will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the St. Ignatius Gymnasium on Riverside Avenue, with two satellite fundraisers set for Wednesday and Friday.

The Knights of Columbus will offer three fundraising meals: a baked haddock dinner from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at St. Ignatius Gym for $5/$10; breakfast items, coffee and juice from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and lunch at noon Saturday.

A Bowling for Waban event also will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bowl-A-Rama on Main Street.

All funds raised will be used for developmental therapy, specialized equipment, therapeutic recreation and other services for children who attend Waban’s Fraser-Ford Child Development Center or who receive services from the Children’s Case Management Program.

CHERRYFIELD

Historic photographs on view

The Cherryfield Public Library is hosting an exhibit of historic Washington County photographs from the Penobscot Marine Museum’s collection through March 30 at 35 Main St.

The exhibit, “Washington County Through Eastern’s Eye,” is drawn from the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company collection, based on glass plate negatives shot from 1909 through the 1950s for use as postcards.

The museum has more than 50,000 glass plate negatives of one-of-a-kind images of farms, industries, small businesses, stores, bridges, schools and other scenes.
