Memorial Day events for the town will include the “Kids Running for Grandpa” Kids Road Race, beginning at 9 a.m., and the annual Memorial Day Parade, starting at 10 a.m., both on Monday at Scarborough High School.

Topic: Assisted living

The Scarborough Public Library will join the Southern Maine Assisted Living Education Group in presenting “Is Assisted Living in Your Future?” from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the library at 48 Gorham Road.

This presentation is intended to inform assisted living consumers and/or their adult children about assisted living and learn what to ask when considering facilities.

A panel of specialists will review aspects of assisted living such as services, accommodations, payment sources, and licensing levels.

Informational handouts will be provided and a question and answer session will follow.

This program is free and open to the public.

Community Library will host an open house and community yard sale Saturday on John Street.

Major dressage event

The first joint National Para Dressage Training Symposium of Carlisle Academy Integrative Equine Therapy & Sports will be held Wednesday through Saturday at Spring Creek Farm.

The event is sponsored by Carlisle Academy, the United States Equestrian Federation and the United States Para Equestrian Association. It will feature judges, trainers and educators from around the world who will instruct 12 Para Equestrians and multiple coaches from across the United States.

Many of these riders are intending to compete at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France in 2014.

This is the second largest international competition for equestrians next to the Olympic/Paralympic Games.

Local Para-Equestrian Mary Jordan of Wells — who represented Team USA at the 2010 World Equestrian Games and was alternate for the 2012 Paralympics — will participate in the event and has a qualifying score to ride in the United States Selection Trials next year.

The public is welcome to attend and scholarship assistance is available for those who would like to participate.

PTO arts event

The Ocean Avenue Elementary School PTO will hold an arts celebration at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday featuring songs written by students with the help of award-winning singer-songwriter Emilia Dahlin; dance performances led by Lisa Hicks, the longtime director of the dance program at Portland Arts and Technology High School; readings from the Dolphin Press, the school magazine led by writer Gibson Fay-LeBlanc; and student artwork.

Celebrate whales

The Portland Public Library and Maine children’s book illustrator Jamie Hogan will celebrate the migration of humpback whales to Maine water with a free family event from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Rines Auditorium.

Young readers will get a chance to stand beside (and inside) a life-sized humpback model as part of an outreach program of the Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine.

Educators from the museum will talk about the daily routine of Istar the Whale, including what she eats, the places she travels, and who she spends her time with.

And, Peaks Island children’s book illustrator Hogan will present her illustrations for the new picture book “Here Come the Humpbacks!,” written by April Pulley Sayre (Charlesbridge Publishers) and lead children in a whale migratory game.

Costumes, props for sale

The Deering Players at Deering High School will sell costumes, props, games, jewelry, kitchen items and other merchandise from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the front lawn of the high school at 370 Stevens Ave.

College planning workshops

The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will host three free Essentials of College Planning workshops for ages 19 and older this June.

Topics will include GED/SAT preparation, college planning, referrals/advocacy, career advising, financial aid options, admissions, application fee waivers and the like.

Naturalist to give talk

Cape resident and master naturalist Erika Rhile will present a program on illegal wildlife trade in Maine at 7 p.m. Thursday at Thomas Memorial Library at 6 Scott Dyer Road.

Rhile’s talk, entitled, “Does Owning That Bird Feather Make You an Outlaw?,” will discuss the laws that govern the possession of wildlife artifacts in Maine, why they exist and how you can make sure you’re in compliance. 

She’ll also bring examples of legal and illegal artifacts, and relate unbelievable stories of real-life incidents of people involved in illegal wildlife trade in Maine.

Visit Girl Scout camps

Girl Scouts of Maine will host two open houses at their two resident camps in June.

Camp Natarswi, located just inside Baxter State Park, will welcome visitors from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday and Camp Pondicherry, at Bridgton, will host an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on June 9.

Walking tours of the grounds will be offered and camp staff will be on hand to talk about Girl Scouts of Maine’s traditional skills-building programs.

Both camps offer one or two week traditional camp programs that include swimming, boating, camping skills, archery, rock climbing, hiking, nature studies, team games, as well as arts, crafts, and theater for girls.

Girls ages 10 and older may select from a variety of specialty camps such as horseback riding, backpacking, sailing, team adventure trips and wilderness survival.

Senior driver class

An AARP Driver Safety program for seniors will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center at 521 Main St.

Safety instructor Joyce Polyniak will teach defensive driving techniques and strategies, reacquaint drivers with traffic laws, rules of the road, how to adjust driving to age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time through an interactive discussion about the changing technology on newer vehicles and the warning signs that suggest it’s time to give up the keys.

Best of all, in Maine, drivers 55 years or older who successfully complete the AARP course are eligible for an insurance discount, good for three years.

Course fee is $14 fee, with a $2 discount for AARP members.

Acadia exhibit opens

Skyline Farm Carriage Museum has opened its summer exhibit “100 Years of Acadia National Park’s Carriage Roads,” viewable from 1 to 4 p.m. each Sunday through Aug. 18 or by appointment at 95 The Lane.

John D. Rockefeller, Jr., in 1913 embarked on a journey to fulfill his vision of building a 57-mile road system on Mount Desert Island for carriage driving, horseback riding, hiking and bicycling.

The museum will display vehicles that were used on that road system through the years, including the world famous Bar Harbor Buckboard and an Abbot-Downing Roof Seat Break.

A separate exhibit, sponsored by Cross Jewelers of Portland, features a dramatic, full-scale replica of the gilded Queen Elizabeth II Coronation State Coach that measures 24′ long and over 13′ tall.

That coach was built in Hollywood for display at Jordan Marsh’s flagship Boston store in celebration of the queen’s 1953 coronation.

Learn CPR for kids

Southern Maine Medical Center will offer a “Safe Baby Infant Safety & Infant/Toddler CPR” class from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at 1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford.

This class provides a non-certificate course by the American Heart Association to family and friends, as well as basic home safety for your baby as they grow.

Cost is $25 per couple or $15 per person.

Genealogy sessions

Kennebunk Free Library, at 112 Main St., will host an “Ancestor Road Show” from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday offering visitors 20 minutes of one-on-one time with genealogy researchers to help resolve research issues.

Sign-up are requested along with the completion of an information form to help the genealogists with their research about your ancestor before the event.

Those forms are available at the library’s website and completed forms should be submitted with a $20 donation before the event.

The event will also include the raffle of heirloom quality genealogy scrapbooks with the drawing held following the program,.

All donations will benefit the Kennebunk Free Library.
