Talk about the Nearings to be presented at library

Greg Joly will present the talk “Who Were the Nearings? Living the Good Life in the 21st Century” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Camden Public Library at 55 Main St.

Joly will explore both the intellectual and homesteading life of Scott and Helen Nearing, using anecdotes, writings and archival photos to show the couple’s sustainability practices and how their ideas continue to inform modern sustainability movements.

Free concert scheduled at local amphitheater

Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Camden Amphitheatre at 55 Main St.

African drumming class offered over eight weeks

Local musician Judy Nielsen will offer an eight-week beginner African drumming class from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, from Aug. 7 to Sept. 25 at Hidden Valley Nature Center.

Nielsen will introduce the basics of hand positions and poly-rhythm while teaching participants to play simple African rhythms.

Cost is $100 for HVNC members and $120 for all others.

Djembes are available for the session.

Farmers and gardeners to learn about arthriitis

Amber Wolfe, from the Arthritis Foundation, will head a free “Arthritis & Agriculture” workshop for farmers, gardeners, agricultural workers, health care professionals and the general public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Pineland Farms Conference Center, Room A, 15 Farm View Drive.

Topics will include information on arthritis as a disease, treatment and pain management options, sources of joint stress and pain on the farm, operation changes, modifications to farm equipment and assistive technology tools. Specific segments on gardening and rural youth will also be discussed.

New Bigelow Lab facility to host an open house

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is inviting the public to the first summer open house on its new LEED® Platinum Ocean Science and Education Campus from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at 60 Bigelow Dr.

The laboratory’s scientists, staff and interns will be on hand to meet informally with visitors and describe the research they are doing to understand the ocean’s microscopic marine organisms and their critical role in the global environment.

The day’s schedule includes a program of short presentations about research projects and the laboratories that support them, as well as self-guided open periods, expedition videos, displays, and hands-on activities.

All ages welcome, but no pets, please.

Learn about Facebook by attending tutorials

The Portland Public Library is offering free Facebook tutorials from 3 to 5 p.m. each Thursday through Aug. 15 at 5 Monument Square. The workshops include an hourlong introduction to Facebook followed by an hour for individual practice during which the instructor will help with specific questions; each class will focus on one aspect of Facebook.

People can take part once for a basic introduction or go weekly for a more in-depth understanding of how to use Facebook.

Babysitter training class to be offered at college

Saint Joseph’s College will offer an American Red Cross Babysitter Training class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Harold Alfond Center at 278 Whites Bridge Road.

The course provides children, ages 11 to 15, with the information and skills necessary to provide safe and responsible care for children in the absence of parents or guardians.

Topics will include leadership skills, caregiving, first aid and safe play.

Students will be given a comprehensive babysitter’s training manual and the tools needed to create a babysitter’s kit.

With successful completion of the course, participants will earn an American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training certification.

Students should bring their own lunch, pencil and paper.

Cost is $75 (or $65 for recertification).

Conservation trust president to lead hike at Great Pond

Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust President Sarah LeVine will lead a hike in the 4,500-acre Great Pond Mountain Wildlands, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Attendees will meet at the Wildlands’ South Gate on Route 1 for a hike on the new Birches Path to Flying Moose Mountain with a detour to the Forgotten Forest, a section of woodland untouched by the timber harvests of the 1990s.

Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, snacks, sun and bug protection.

Civil War documentary to be shown at library

McArthur Library and the Maine Public Broadcasting Network will offer a free screening of MPBN’s Civil War documentary, “The Sixteenth Maine at Gettysburg,” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the library, located at 270 Main St.

The film brings to light the role this Maine regiment played in the battle and its overall place in the American Civil War.

MPBN staff will be at the screening to introduce the film and lead a discussion at the end of the documentary.
