SCARBOROUGH

March of Dimes truck benefit

The third annual Touch a Truck to benefit the Maine Chapter of the March of Dimes will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Gateway Shoppes in Scarborough, off Exit 42 of the Maine Turnpike.

Admission is $5, with children younger than 2 years old admitted free; all children must be accompanied by an adult. The event also will feature children's entertainment, raffles and refreshments.

 

Project Linus blanket day

Project Linus will have a blanket day from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at St. Maximillian Kolbe Church.

Participants should bring a sewing machine to make simple, reversible blankets from a pre-cut kit or bring a blanket in progress to work on. Participants also are asked to bring two yards of new flannel fabric to replenish the kits.

GORHAM

Woman's Club opens year

The Gorham Woman's Club is starting a new season at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fellowship Hall in First Parish Church.

The service organization is open to all who are interested in their community and want to pass a social afternoon with others interested in the same. This month, there will be an opportunity to learn more about the state and federal affiliations of the club as State President Suzanne Raymond will speak, starting at 1 p.m.

 

PORTLAND

College planning workshop

The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will host a free workshop on the "Essentials of College Planning" at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Portland Adult Education, 57 Douglass St.

Brain tumor program

There will be a workshop for caregivers of brain tumor patients starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Dana Conference Center at Maine Medical Center, 22 Bramhall St.

FALMOUTH

Heritage Day looks back

The Maine Heritage Day is taking place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Falmouth Heritage Museum, 60 Woods Road. The event is free, with refreshments served.

Attendees can experience the way life used to be in Falmouth during the 19th century, with a sheep-shearing demonstration featuring the production of textiles from carding, spinning and knitting. Docent-lead tours will also be available.

 

LunchBox with an author

LunchBox Friends will return to the Falmouth Memorial Library at noon on Tuesday. Jerry Genesio, author of "Portland Neck: the Hanging of Thomas Bird," will be the featured speaker, with books available for sale and signing. For more information, call the library at 781-2351.

SOUTH PORTLAND

Cancer center program

The Cancer Community Center is offering a workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday on photography as journal keeping. Also, from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays, there will be a free meditation in motion class.

Fitness class introductions

The South Portland Community Center, 21 Nelson Road, is holding a free demonstration week for its adult fitness classes starting Monday.

NEW GLOUCESTER

Shaker Village programs

The Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village is offering spinning and blacksmithing demonstrations beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.

There also will be a book arts workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday for $40 with Bonnie Faulkner, owner of Heron Point Gallery. And at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, there will be guided nature walks for $5 and $2 for children. For more information or to register for the book arts workshop, call 926-4597.

WINDHAM

Holiday book, blanket show

Project Linus is hosting a Holiday Book and Blanket Show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at North Windham Union Church, United Church of Christ.

The event will display winter or holiday-season blankets with an attached book for winter giving. Also, David Packham Jr., author of "A Mother's Dream," will be there to support the show with the dress that inspired the book.
