School notes


Private Schools

Berwick Academy, South Berwick: Students earned a total of 30 medals in the National Spanish Exam. In addition, 42 students earned honorable mention. Local gold medal winners were: Jamie Meader of South Berwick and Ellen Lynch of York. Silver medal winners were: Win Hahn of Berwick and Zach Flinkstrom of South Berwick. Bronze medal winners were Mary dePascale of Eliot, Ben Siegel of York, Samantha Sullivan of South Berwick, Abby Donoghue of Kittery Point, Emily Borkowski of Wells, Marc Lehoux and Chris Coughlan of Kennebunk Beach and Lily Reed of Cape Neddick.

Choate Rosemary Hall, Wallingford, Conn.: Megan Lubetkin of Cape Elizabeth, has graduated and was awarded the Choate Rosemary Hall Award.

Kent (Conn.) School: Larkin Domench, grade 11, of Union, was named to the honor roll.

Loomis Chaffee School, Windsor, Conn.: spring honor roll: High Honors: Douglas Gorman, junior, Saco; Honors: Molly Strabley, junior, Yarmouth.

Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, N.H.: Winter/Spring honor roll: Highest Honors: Madeline Logan, grade 9, from Portland and Maxwell Payson, grade 12, from Falmouth; High Honors: John Kennealy, grade 10, Cape Elizabeth and Jalen Diffin, grade 11, South Portland; Honors: John Hart, grade 12, Cumberland.

Pomfret (Conn.) School: Jon Pate of Saco received The Edward E. Kelley Award, which is presented to the post-graduate student-athlete who has achieved at a high level in the classroom while being involved in varsity sports.

Waynflete School, Portland: Jonathan Silin, from South Freeport, was awarded one of just over 600 National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarships for 2012-2013 and is the only student from Maine to win the award. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in overseas immersion programs. Silin was able to study Mandarin Chinese in Chengdu, China, for six weeks this summer.
