AUGUSTA – Maine Gov. Paul LePage has signed a bill directing the state to remove or relocate dozens of informational signs along its interstate highways.

Some lawmakers and municipal officials objected to the measure because they said the signs are vital to attracting visitors.

But Maine officials said the state’s failure to remove signs for things like colleges, parks and recreational attractions next to the highways will cause the state to lose millions of dollars in highway funding for failing to comply with federal rules.

The measure signed by the Republican governor on Wednesday will go into law 90 days after lawmakers adjourn for the session.
