PORTLAND — The Maine League of Young Voters on Tuesday announced its endorsements of a slate of candidates running for Portland City Council and School Board in the Nov. 5 election.

The group's endorsements include Chris Shorr and Wells Lyons for City Council at-large seats.

Shorr is running against Councilor Jill Duson and Chris Smaha. The group cited Shorr's opposition to the sale of part of Congress Square Plaza, a deal that Duson ultimately supported.

Lyons is running against former Maine Rep. Jon Hinck. The group said it chose Lyons for his creativity and engagement with Portland issues.

The league did not endorse a candidate in the District 3 council race because neither candidate responded to its questionnaire, it said.

The league endorsed Anna Trevorrow as its top choice among six candidates running for two at-large seats on the School Board. While voters will get to choose two candidates, the league endorsed only Trevorrow. She is running against Pious Ali, Frederick Miller, Deborah Brewer, Gene Landry and Ralph Carmona.

Group members also voted to support the Portland ballot initiative making it legal to possess marijuana in the city, and to support the approval of five state bonds for transportation, education, and infrastructure projects.

The league plans to release its candidate voter guide, with write-ups on each candidate who filled out a league candidate questionnaire, in early October. It also will be available at: maine.theleague.com.
