It’s one measure of Jamee Luce’s teaching gifts that Messalonksee High School was recently named to the College Board’s second annual Advanced Placement Honor Roll – the only school in Maine to be so recognized.
A math and computer science teacher at the Oakland school since 2004, Luce has taught AP calculus and AP computer science, plus other math classes and geometry at the middle-school level. “She is a dedicated teacher, often staying after school and getting there early to help students,†notes Luce’s Forty Under 40 award nominator, Abigail Perry.
“Her classroom is routinely filled with students during lunch hours and study halls. She is a popular, effective teacher, well-respected by students, fellow teachers and the administrators in the district.â€Â
Outside and beyond the classroom, Perry says, “Jamee has been head mentor for FIRST FRC Team 2648 (www.team2648.com) since its inception in 2007. FIRST is an international, student-based collection of programs whose mission is to ‘inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills’ (www.usfirst.org).
“The team, Infinite Loop, has taken off at the high school, and routinely mentors Lego league teams at local elementary and middle schools,†Perry adds. Luce has taken students to compete in Boston, Atlanta and other cities; this year, she will bring a group to St. Louis for the World Championships.
“Of the group of students who graduated last year, every one is studying engineering, except for one pursuing a degree in pharmacy,†Perry notes.
Luce grew up in Starks and graduated from Madison High, then the University of Nevada. She previously taught in Boston and at Cheverus High, and lives in Augusta, where her volunteer work for the local food bank includes delivering groceries.
