    Top Ten Seniors

    Valedictorian: Amalia Siegel
    Valedictorian Amalia "Molly" Siegel is the daughter of Kirk and Martha Siegel of Bethel, Maine. She has attended Gould for four years and is a member of the National Honor Society. During her tenure at Gould, Molly received the Freshman Mathematics Book Award, the Carolyn S. Wollen Award, the French Book Award, the Music Book Award, the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Achievement Award and the Theatre Book Award. Over her academic career, her course work has included AP Language and Composition, AP US History, AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Government and Politics, and AP Literature and Composition. A driven Nordic skier, Molly was a member of the Gould Academy Competition Program Nordic team throughout her career and was named to the US Junior National Team her senior year. Molly spent three years on the cross-country running team and four years as a member of the Gould Drama Program and Gould Singers. A talented writer, she was a peer tutor in the evenings in the Writing Center and a contributor to the Gould faculty and student blog. Molly will attend Dartmouth College in the fall.

    Salutatorian: Abbie Goldberg
    Abbie Goldberg is the daughter of Jonathan and Kate Goldberg of Bethel, Maine. She has attended Gould for four years and is a member of the National Honor Society. Over her academic career, her course work has included AP Government and Politics, AP Literature and Composition, AP Biology, AP Calculus, and AP US History. A talented performer, Abbie has spent four years on stage at Gould as a member of the Drama Program and Gould Singers. She also participated in Gould's Dance Program. In the winter, Abbie was a member of the prep-snowboarding team for two years and the Gould Academy Competition Nordic team for two years. A natural leader, Abbie was a student proctor her senior year. She is the recipient of the Freshman English Book Award, the Sophomore English Book Award, the Junior English Book Award, the Drama Book Award, the French Book Award, and the Wellesley Book Award. Abbie will attend Brandeis University in the fall.

    James Scott Cooper Cameron
    James "Scott" Cameron is the son of Ian and Catherine Cameron of Darien, Connecticut. He has attended Gould for four years. Over his career, his academic course load has included AP Government and Politics, Aeronautics, Astronomy, Computer Science, and Robotics. Scott has been a four-year tennis player and cross-country runner. During the winter he was a member of the Gould Ski Patrol earning his "jacket" his senior year. An avid outdoorsman, Scott spent five weeks in Acadia National Park in Maine and three weeks at Mt. Greylock State Reservation in Massachusetts, building trails for his senior Four Point project. Scott will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall.

    Merritt Harlan
    Merritt Harlan is the daughter of Geoff and Megan Harlan of Southborough, Massachusetts. She has attended Gould for four years and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is the recipient of the Art Book Award, the Freshman Science Book Award, the Sophomore History Book Award, the Sophomore Mathematics Book Award, the Sophomore Science Book Award, the Bausch and Lomb Science Book Award, the Dartmouth Alumni Club Book Award, the Edmond J. Vachon Award, the Society of Women Engineers Certificate of Merit, the Mathematics Book Award, and the Spanish Book Award. Merritt has been a four-year varsity athlete in field hockey and lacrosse where she was also team captain. In the winter she competed on the Gould Academy Competition Program alpine team. Merritt also served as a peer tutor in the Math Center and in the Writing Center. Over her career, her course load has included AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP US History and AP Statistics. She will attend Williams College in the fall.

    Bo Huang
    Bo "Jason" Huang is the son of Lisong Huang and Tao Bai of Guangzho, China. He has attended Gould for three years and is a member of the National Honor Society. Over his career, his academic course load has included AP Biology, AP Statistics, AP Physics-Mechanics, AP Calculus, and Astronomy. Jason played varsity tennis during his three years at Gould. He was also a member of the golf team and prep -snowboarding team. A natural leader, Jason served as a head student proctor his senior year. He was also a peer tutor in the Gould Math Center. Jason is the recipient of the Clarkson Leadership Award and the Rensselaer Award. He will attend Washington University in St. Louis in the fall.

    Aaron Mason
    Aaron Mason is the son of George and Susan Mason of Nobleboro, Maine. He has attended Gould for four years and is a member of the National Honor Society. Over his academic career, his course load has included AP Literature and Composition, AP Government and Politics, and AP US History. Aaron was a four-year varsity baseball player and a three-year varsity soccer player. He was also a member of the Gould Ski Patrol earning his "jacket" his junior year. Aaron is a talented musician and played saxophone in the Gould band during his four years. He served as a student proctor his senior year. Aaron is a recipient of the Music Book Award and the St. Michael's College Book Award. He will attend the University of Rochester in the fall.

    Jacquelyn O'Sullivan
    Jacquelyn "Jackie" O'Sullivan is the daughter of Robert and Maureen O'Sullivan of Weymouth, Massachusetts. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has attended Gould for four years. Over her academic career, Jackie's course load has included AP Biology, AP Literature and Composition, AP US History, and AP Government and Politics. She is the recipient of the Spanish Book Award and the St. Michael's College Book Award. Outside of the classroom, Jackie participated on the varsity soccer team, varsity lacrosse team, and was a rock climber as a senior. In the winters throughout her career, she was a member of the Gould Academy Competition Program freestyle team. She also served as peer tutor in the Writing Center, and in her senior year she was a student proctor. Jackie will attend St. Michael's College in the fall.

    Eliana Rowe
    Eliana Rowe is the daughter of Robert Rowe and the late Renee Quimby of Tampa, Florida. She has attended Gould for four years and is a member of the National Honor Society. Over her academic career, Eliana's course load has included AP Government and Politics, AP Literature and Composition, AP Statistics, and AP Chemistry. Outside of the classroom, Eliana played varsity soccer, junior varsity tennis and was a member of the Outing Club. In the winter, she participated in the Gould Rugrats Program, teaching local children to ski and snowboard. She also served as a peer tutor in the Gould Writing Center. Eliana will attend New York University in the fall.

    Margaret Runyon
    Margaret "Meg" Runyon is the daughter of Charles and Susan Runyon of Wilmington, New York. She has attended Gould for three years and is a member of the National Honor Society. Meg's academic course load over her Gould experience has included AP US History, AP Chemistry, AP Government and Politics, and AP Statistics. Outside of the classroom, Meg was a member of the cycling team, the equestrian team and the Competition Program Nordic team during her three years at Gould. Meg will attend Mount Holyoke College in the fall.

    Abigail Turner
    Abigail "Abby" Turner is the daughter of Bob and Sue Turner of Bryant Pond, Maine. She has attended Gould for three years and is a member of the National Honor Society. Over her academic career, her course load has included AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP US History, AP Literature and Composition, and AP Statistics. Outside of the classroom, Abby spent her three years on the cycling team and mountain biking team. She was also a member of the Gould Ski Patrol receiving her "jacket" her senior year. A talented writer, she was a weekly contributor to the Gould faculty and student blog and a peer tutor in the Gould Writing Center. Abby is the recipient of the Junior History Book Award. She will attend Bowdoin College in the fall.



    Graduating senior awards Merritt Harlan received the Headmaster's Bowl, presented annually to the senior who has exhibited the highest standards of scholarship, character, and service to the school and participation in activities of the school.

    Amalia Siegel received the Scholarship Shield, awarded to the senior with the highest academic average.

    Seniors acknowledged for achieving a cumulative average of 90 or above over their careers at Gould are: Elizabeth Cramton, Abbie Goldberg, Merritt Harlan, Bo Huang, Isabel Kannegieser, Aaron Mason, Jacquelyn O'Sullivan, Eliana Rowe, Margaret Runyon, Amalia Siegel, Abigail Turner, and Jesse Tutor.

    Members of this year's senior class elected to the National Honor Society are: Margaret Adams, Stefanie Casella, Jebediah Clarke, Elizabeth Cramton, Kyle Curry, Mitchell Fraser, Rose Gill, Abbie Goldberg, Merritt Harlan, Bo Huang, Connor Huggins, Isabel Kannegieser, Robert Leeson, Aaron Mason, George Merrill, Jacquelyn O'Sullivan, Eliana Rowe, Margaret Runyon, Hailey Sarausky, Mirina Sato, Eugene Shin, Amalia Siegel, Abigail Turner, Jesse Tutor, Marguerite Wiser

    Merritt Harlan received the Francis "Hi" Berry Award, and Jebediah Clarke received the Joe Roderick Award for outstanding competitive spirit through example and overall competence in athletics.

    Stefanie Casella received the Gould Academy Alumni Association Award, which recognizes the son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter of an alumnus or alumna whose attitude, involvement, and contributions typify the ideals of Gould's alumni and its Alumni Association. Stefanie's father, Robert Casella, is a member of the class of 1975.

    Academic Book Prizes were presented to the following students: English: Amalia Siegel, History: Abbie Goldberg, Mathematics and Science: Merritt Harlan, French: Isabel Kannegieser, Spanish: Jacquelyn O'Sullivan, Computer Science: Nicholas Schwarz, Theatre: Abbie Goldberg, Pottery and Technical Theatre: Helen Cooper, Art: Ian Jackson, and Dance: Rose Gill.

    The Linwood "Lindy" Lowell Award, an honor voted upon by the graduating class, is given annually to the member of the senior class whose friendly personality and helpful nature have brightened the lives of fellow students. The class of 2012 chose to award the honor to classmate Damian Dryjas.

    The Senior Point Award, given to that senior whose Senior Point project best exemplifies the three values at the heart of any Gould endeavor, "the energy to try, willingness to risk, and capacity to tolerate," was given to Eliana Rowe.

    Merritt Harlan received the William P. Clough III award, which recognizes an on-snow athlete who has demonstrated outstanding character, attitude, and leadership.

    The MELMAC Principals Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who has made a difference in the lives of others and that of his or her community and is a solid school citizen involved in extracurricular activities; a student who has exhibited a commitment to public service; and an individual with the potential to make a difference in the world. This year it was awarded to Jonathan Scheidegger.

    The Ralph Gould Music Award was given to senior Aaron Mason in recognition of his improvement, excellence, and contribution to the school in the area of music.

    Gemma Alcodori Leon received the Gayle A. Foster Award for her outstanding work in photography.

    The Rhode Island School of Design President's Award recognizes an accomplished artist in the senior class for his or her effort and achievement in the arts, overall academic achievement, and creativity and talent. The Rhode Island School of Design established the award in 1984. This year's recipient was Jamin Byun.

    Yushen Xiang and Wyatt Costello received the Elwood F. Ireland Award, given to the boy and girl of the senior class who best exemplified the qualities for membership in the National Honor Society but who were not eligible academically for consideration.

    The Town of Newry presents a monetary gift to each of the graduating seniors who are full-time residents. This year's recipients were Cody Bullen, Scott Cameron, Jameson Corey, and Zachary Finnimore

    Underclass awards acknowledged at graduation ceremony:

    Ella Dorval Hall received the Edmond J. Vachon Award given to a member of the junior class for outstanding contribution to the school and achievement in the community. The award was created by Gould Academy in honor of Headmaster Emeritus Edmond J. Vachon. Mr. Vachon joined the Gould faculty in September, 1940, became Senior Master in 1941, Associate Headmaster in 1954, and Headmaster in 1959. He also served on the Gould Board of Trustees from 1961 until his retirement as Headmaster in June of 1967.

    Delaney Pals received the Carolyn S. Wollen Award given to a sophomore girl who reveals leadership potential through personal example and engages fully in school life. The award was created by Headmaster Emeritus and Mrs. William P. Clough III in honor of Trustee Emerita Carolyn S. Wollen who personified these qualities as a Gould Academy Trustee.
