HIGH SCHOOLS

Three Maine runners qualify for national races

Three high school seniors from Maine earned berths in the Foot Locker cross country national championships by finishing among the top 10 in the Northeast Regional races Saturday at New York City’s Van Cortlandt Park.

Josef Holt-Andrews of Telstar and Dan Curts of Ellsworth placed fifth and sixth – two seconds apart – in the boys’ seeded race.

Kirstin Sandreuter of Greely placed 10th in the girls’ race to secure the final Northeastern ticket to San Diego for the national championships Dec. 14.

Sandreuter’s time over the 5K course was 18:06.

Holt-Andrews, Maine’s Class C state champion, finished in 15:37 followed in 15:39 by Curts, the two-time Class B state champ.

Mickey Burke of Henrietta, N.Y., won the boys’ race in 15:19. The girls’ winner was Tessa Barrett of Waverly, Pa., in 17:33.

Other notable finishers from Maine include Liam Simpson of Cape Elizabeth (29th in 16:24), Brayden Beardsley of Surry (34th in 16:25), Kyle Kennedy of Cape Elizabeth (91st in 17:09) and Matt Malcom of Boothbay (92nd in 17:10) for boys, and Anne McKeen of Hallowell (53rd in 19:46), Maddy Doyle of South Berwick (79th in 20:48) and Hannah Austin of North Yarmouth (88th in 21:02).

Girls’ Hockey: Brennah O’Connell and Paige Veilleux scored as visiting Winslow (1-1) earned a 2-1 win over Brunswick (0-3).

SOCCER

PREMIER LEAGUE: Arsenal powered to a seven-point league lead by beating Cardiff, 3-0, as Aaron Ramsey recorded a pair of goals.

SPANISH LEAGUE: Diego Costa scored his 15th goal of the season to seal Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 win at Elche, lifting Madrid level with Barcelona at the top of the league.

ITALIAN LEAGUE: Antonio Cassano scored his 100th Serie A goal as Parma was held to a 1-1 draw at Milan by 10-man Bologna.

BUNDESLIGA: Arjen Robben scored twice for unbeaten Bayern Munich to beat bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig, 2-0.

Also Borussia Dortmund needed two late penalty scores to win 3-1 at Mainz.

FRENCH LEAGUE: Monaco was missing star striker Radamel Falcao, but beat Rennes, 2-0, to keep up the pressure on leader Paris Saint-Germain.

GOLF

PGA: Charl Schwartzel opened a two-shot lead over England’s Richard Finch after three rounds at the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Malalene, South Africa.

Victor Riu of France is another shot back in third place.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Adam Scott moved closer to an Australian triple crown with a 4-under 68 at Sydney to take a four-shot lead over Rory McIlroy, heading into the final round of the Australian Open.

McIlroy, who lost ground with a bogey and double-bogey, is vying for his first win of the year.

OLYMPICS

IOC: Committee President Thomas Bach met with Russian gay rights activists who urged an investigation before the Sochi Olympics into national laws banning “gay propaganda.”

SKIING

WORLD CUP: Switzerland’s Lara Gut had another blazing run to win her second straight women’s World Cup race, finishing in 1 minute, 18.42 seconds to edge a strong Austrian contingent in the super-G at Beaver Creek, Colo.

Elisabeth Goergl of Austria originally took second but was disqualified for improper equipment, bumping up teammates Anna Fenninger and Nicole Hosp to second and third.
