Reed breaks PGA record in Humana Challenge

Make it another 9-under 63 for Patrick Reed in the Humana Challenge at La Quinta, Calif.

Reed broke the PGA Tour record for relation to par in the first three rounds of a tournament, finishing at 27-under to take a seven-stroke lead into the final round.

Reed broke the tour mark of 25-under set by Gay Brewer in the 1967 Pensacola Open and matched by Ernie Els in the 2003 Tournament of Champions, Steve Stricker in the 2010 John Deere Classic and Pat Perez in the 2009 event in La Quinta.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Phil Mickelson surged up the leaderboard with a 9-under 63 to put himself in second place after the third round of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, while Rory McIlroy was hit with a two-shot penalty for a rules infraction that dropped him into a tie for fourth.

Mickelson barely made the cut but had the best round of the day with nine birdies and an eagle coupled with two bogeys to sit two shots behind leader Craig Lee of Scotland. Lee shot a 69 for a 12-under 204 total.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Arsenal and Manchester City showed no sign of slowing up in the race for the league title by grabbing routine home wins to stay 1-2 in the standings.

SPAIN: Cristiano Ronaldo scored a long-range goal worthy of the recently awarded Ballon d’Or to spark Real Madrid’s 5-0 rout at Real Betis.

ITALY: Roma eased to a 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Livorno to keep up the pressure on Serie A leader Juventus.

BASEBALL

MLB: The Texas Rangers agreed to a minor league deal with left-hander Rafael Perez, 31, that includes an invitation to major league spring training.

Perez has a 21-12 record with three saves and a 3.64 ERA over 338 career appearances in the majors, all in relief with Cleveland.

MEMORIAL: Hall of Fame broadcaster Jerry Coleman was remembered with a service at San Diego’s Petco Park that included an F-18 flyover, a 21-gun salute and a eulogy by former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre.

Coleman, 89, died Jan. 5. He won four World Series titles with the Yankees and the only major leaguer who saw combat in both World II and Korea, flying a combined 120 missions as a Marine Corps pilot.

FIGURE SKATING

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: Javier Fernandez of Spain successfully defended his European title ahead of two Russian rivals despite several small mistakes in the free skate at Budapest, Hungary.

Fernandez, coached in Toronto by former two-time Olympic silver medallist Brian Orser, scored 267.11 points and is the first champion to successfully defend since Russia’s Evgeny Plushenko in 2005 and 2006.

Sergei Voronov was second with 252.55 points and Konstantin Menshov had 237.24 in third as neither could challenge the Spaniard’s lead from the short program.

LUGE

WORLD CUP: Germany’s Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt clinched the overall luge doubles championship at Altenberg, Germany, and will head to the Sochi Olympics as favorites for gold.

For the U.S., Christian Niccum and Jayson Terdiman were 11th, five spots ahead of fellow Americans Matthew Mortensen and Preston Griffall.
