BOYS SOCCER: Scarborough upsets Gorham for Western Class A title

By Mike Lowe mlowe@mainetoday.com

GORHAM — Sam Cekada scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half as second-ranked Scarborough High defeated top-ranked Gorham 1-0 Wednesday night in the Western Class A boys' soccer championship game.

Gorham, which finished 14-1-2, dominated the first half, but could never beat Scarborough keeper Pat Stanton. Then the Red Storm (15-0-2) took over.

They controlled the midfield, leading to numerous opportunities. Finally, an Austin Downing cross from the left found Cekada in the middle of the box and his shot beat Gorham keeper Alex McCarthy inside the left post.

Scarborough will play the Eastern Maine champion in the state championship game at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hampden Academy. It will be the Red Storm's sixth appearance since 2003
