LOWELL, Mass. – Tommy Lawrence pitched a two-hitter to lead top-seeded Maine to a 7-0 victory over No. 4 Stony Brook in the opening game of the America East baseball tournament Wednesday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.

Eric White of Brewer homered and drove in four runs for Maine (35-20), which will play the Albany-Binghamton winner Thursday night at 8 p.m. in the winners bracket final of the four-team, double-elimination tournament.

Scott Heath of Westbrook’s two-out, two-run single was the fifth of six Black Bear hits in the first inning off Stony Brook ace Frankie Vanderka (8-4).

The shutout by Lawrence (10-2) was the first in America East tournament play since Mike Aguilera of Binghamton beat Maine 6-0 in 2010. Lawrence walked two, struck out six and allowed only one runner to third base, and then only because of an error.

The tournament winner receives an automatic berth into the 64-team NCAA Division I tournament.
