Outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr., who played for the Portland Sea Dogs last season, will start this season with the Boston Red Sox.

Boston purchased his contract from the Sea Dogs on Sunday. Bradley will start in left field and Jonny Gomes will move to DH. The Sox placed DH David Ortiz on the DL with inflammation on his heels.

Bradley was a longshot to make the team, but had a great spring, hitting .441 with two homers, 12 RBI and two stolen bases. He is the first Boston player to go directly from Double-A to the majors to start a season since Shea Hillenbrand in 2001.

The Sox also designated infielder Mauro Gomez for assignment and placed pitchers Craig Breslow (inflammation left shoulder) and Franklin Morales (bulging disk in lower back) on the 15-day disabled list.

Boston opens the season Monday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
