BANGOR — Ashleigh Roberts sank three free throws as the University of Maine women’s basketball team scored their final seven points from the line to open the season with a 64-59 victory over North Dakota State.

Anna Helse’s foul shot gave Maine a 47-46 lead with 12:32 left to play. Liz Wood made a layup and Roberts converted a three-point play to increase the lead to 52-46 with 10:47 left. Liz Keena drove for a pair of layups to bring the Bison (1-1) to within 52-50, but Lauren Bodine’s 3-pointer and Wood’s free throw put the Black Bears’ lead back to 56-50. After a pair of Bison free throws, Chantel Charles drained another 3-pointer for a 59-52 lead with 3:42 left.

Keena made another layup and two foul shots during a Bison run that narrowed the margin to 59-57 with just over a minute left, but Courtney Anderson and Roberts countered with two free throws each to push the lead back to 63-57 with 14 seconds left.

MEN’S SOCCER

COLBY COLLEGE: Mark Serdjenian resigned after 38 seasons as coach.

An All-Maine selection as goalkeeper for Colby, he took over as coach in 1976, winning just four games in his first two years, but leading the Mules to a 11-2-1 mark and the ECAC New England Division II and III title in 1978.

Serdjenian led Colby to a 13-1-2 record in 1990, ending the season as the top-ranked team in New England Division III as well as being ranked as high as sixth nationally. After a semifinal ECAC appearance in 1992, Colby finished 16-1-1 in 1993 and won the ECAC New England Division III title. The Mules went 4-10 this past season.

Serdjenian will continue to be an assistant coach for the women’s lacrosse team and have other administrative duties.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

SOUTHERN MAINE COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Adam Perron resigned as coach.

The Seawolves had an overall record of 16-17-5 and a YSCC record of 13-13-3 over Perron’s three-year tenure. He led the South Portland school to the YSCC playoffs in 2012 and 2013.

(8) CLEMSON 55, GEORGIA TECH 31: Tajh Boyd passed for 340 yards and four touchdowns to break Philip Rivers’ ACC career record.

Boyd has 97 touchdown passes, two more than Rivers – now with the San Diego Chargers – had at North Carolina State from 2000-03.
