GORHAM — Cassandra Sherman and Julia Pearl scored two goals apiece, and Liz Bergstrom needed just 13 saves as Southern Maine shut out New England College 6-0 in a women’s hockey game on Friday.

Erin Banfield added a goal and an assist and Chelsea Boucher also scored for USM (3-0, 2-0), which chased New England starting goalie Lauren Hopps midway through the third.

MIDDLEBURY 2, COLBY 1: The Panthers got goals from Anna Van Kula and Katie Mandigo and held on the beat the Mules in a NESCAC opener at Waterville.

Middlebury had a 42-22 shot advantage and led 2-0 after Mandigo’s goal 12 minutes into the second. Elisa Rascia scored for Colby at 13:13 of the period.

Brianne Wheeler made 40 saves for the Mules.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE 67, SALVE REGINA 45: Rebecca Knight scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds as the Huskies won an opener over the Seahawks in the UM-Farmington Tip-Off Tournament at Farmington.

Abby Hasson added 10 points while Megan Pelletier and Mariah Callendar each had eight.

ST. JOSEPH’S 54, ST. JOHN FISHER 42: Morgan Cahill scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the first half as the Monks downed the Cardinals in the Curry College Tip-Off Tournament at Milton, Mass.

Lindsay Moore had eight points, and Abby Young and Emily Kehoe chipped in seven apiece for the Monks.

UNE 101, DANIEL WEBSTER 31: Meghan Gribbin scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds as the Nor’easters rolled over the Eagles in the Ramada Roundball Invitational at Saco.

Kelly Coleman added 16 points with a team-high 14 rebounds for UNE, which finished with a 61-28 rebounding advantage.

Alicia Brown had 13 points and Lauren Hayden and Michaela Flanagan each had 10 points for UNE, which scored the first 12 points and led 55-12 at halftime.

BOWDOIN 66, NORWICH 55: Kristen Pure scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers for the Polar Bears against the Cadets in the Salem State Tip-Off Tournament at Salem, Mass.

COLBY 77, EASTERN NAZARENE 59: Jen Nale scored a game-high 21 points, including five three-pointers to lead the Mules over the Lions in the Brandeis University Tournament in Waltham, Mass.

Desi Smith added 16 points, followed by Gabe Donahue with 12, and Mia Diplock and Carlyanne Wolfington with 11 apiece.

MT. HOLYOKE 77, BATES 63: Kate Karraker scored 20 points as the Lyons handled the Bobcats in the Maine Maritime Tip-Off at Castine.

Meredith Kelly had 26 points and Bernadette Connors followed with 12 points for Bates.

(1) UCONN 72, MARYLAND 55: Breanna Stewart scored 26 points, and top-ranked Connecticut showed its depth in a win at College Park, Md.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

COLBY 83, ANNA MARIA 61: Chris Hudnut had 21 points and eight rebounds as the Mules opened with a win over the Amcats in the first game of the UMass-Dartmouth tournament at North Dartmouth, Mass.

Luke Westman added 13 points and 10 boards, and Patrick Stewart and Ryan Jann added 14 points apiece for Colby.

WESTFIELD STATE 68, USM 60: The Owls finished on a 14-7 run to hand the Huskies a season-opening loss in the second game of the Holiday Inn Express Classic at Westfield, Mass.

For USM, Conor Sullivan had 14 points and 11 rebounds and James Odneal added 16 points.

BATES 107, UM-AUGUSTA 46: Mike Boornazian had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead the Bobcats, who opened the season by routing the Moose (0-5) in the first game of the round-robin Bates Tip-Off Classic at Lewiston.

BOWDOIN 80, WESTERN CONNECTICUT STATE 55: Junior Grant White scored a career-high 20 points, John Swords had 11 points and 13 rebounds and the Polar Bears opened with a big win over the Colonials on the first day of the Regis College Tip-Off Tournament at Weston, Mass.

(3) LOUISVILLE 99, CORNELL 54: Kevin Ware scored quickly in his return for Louisville as the defending NCAA champion Cardinals (3-0) posted their school-record 19th straight win, beating Cornell at home.

(4) DUKE 97, FLORIDA ATLANTIC 64: Rodney Hood scored a career-high 28 points and Jabari Parker added 21 as Duke (2-1) won at Durham, N.C.

MEN’S HOCKEY

UNE 3, ST. MICHAEL’S 2: Zeth Zielinski had a goal and an assist for the Nor’easters (2-2-1, 1-2 ECAC East), who took a 3-0 lead and held off a late charge from the Purple Knights (0-2, 0-2) at Biddeford.

UNE got a goal from Zach Lokey late in the first and one from Tom Gildersleeve midway through the second before Zielinski added the key insurance goal at 1:50 of the third.

UNE goalie Colby Drost stopped 38 shots.

NORWICH 4, USM 1: Cody Smith had a goal and two assists, helping the Cadets (3-0, 2-0 ECAC East) down the Huskies (1-2, 1-2) at Gorham.

Norwich outshot USM 23-7 in the first two periods on its way to a 2-0 lead. The Cadets tacked on two power-play goals in the third, with Angelo Vrachnas scoring on the power play for the Huskies.

CROSS COUNTRY

NCAA REGIONALS: Six Maine runners are headed to the NCAA Division I championships next Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind., after strong performances in regional meets Friday.

Will Geoghegan of Brunswick and Henry Sterling of Freeport will represent Dartmouth at nationals after the Big Green earned an at-large berth out of the East Regional in New York’s Van Cortlandt Park. Geoghegan, a senior, placed fifth with a time of 30 minutes, 22.10 seconds on a 10-kilometer course. Sterling, also a senior, was 34th in 31:02.60.

UMaine senior Kelton Cullenberg of Chesterville qualified as an individual, finishing 17th in 30:35.70.

At the Great Lakes Regional in Madison, Wis., former Madison High standout Matt McClintock, a sophomore at Purdue, took second place in 30:07.00.

Two Maine women – Bethanie Brown of Waterville and Abbey Leonardi of Kennebunk – helped their teams qualify. Brown, a freshman at Iowa State, placed third in the Midwest Regional at Ames, Iowa, as the Cyclones captured the team title. Brown’s time on the 6-kilometer course was 20:24.03.

Leonardi, a sophomore, was 31st (20:21.85) in the West Regional at Sacramento, Calif., as defending national champion Oregon earned an at-large berth with a third-place finish.
