Smith, 25, was a 6-foot-3 guard on the 2010-11 Maine Red Claws team, averaging 13.6 points per game. He played last season in the Czech Republic.
Austin Ainge, director of player personnel for the Celtics, confirmed the invitation while in Portland today for the Maine Junior Red Claws basketball camp at the Portland Expo. Smith has always shown the ability to score. His defense has improved, said Ainge.
Smith has played well for the Celtics' summer league teams in Orlando and Las Vegas, shooting 3-pointers at a 50 percent clip. Smith, who played his college ball at Southern Indiana University, has signed a non-guaranteed contract with the Celtics.
