College roundup: Bowdoin edges Connecticut College in women’s basketball

The Polar Bears improve to 12-1 with a 58-56 win.

BRUNSWICK — Shannon Brady made two free throws with one second left as Bowdoin held off Connecticut College for a 58-56 win in a New England Small College Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Friday night.

The Polar Bears (12-1, 1-0 NESCAC) took a 54-49 lead on a Megan Phelps layup with 2:58 remaining. Caitlin Cimino of Falmouth answered with a 3-pointer and eventually tied the game with a layup in the final minute.

Brady led Bowdoin with 18 points, while Kirsten Prue and Sarah Binkhorst added 11 each. Tara Gabelman of Connecticut College (7-5, 0-1) scored 26 points.

WESLEYAN 59, COLBY 49: Desi Smith scored 15 points for the Mules (5-8, 0-1 NESCAC) in a loss to the Cardinals (10-3, 1-0) at Waterville.

MIDDLEBURY 67, BATES 54: The Panthers (5-6, 1-0 NESCAC) opened the game with a 10-0 run and went on to defeat the Bobcats (7-6, 0-1) at Middlebury, Vt.

Meredith Kelly led Bates with 17 points. Allaina Murphy had 12 points and three steals.

SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 63, ST. JOSEPH’S (VT.) 47: Danielle McCusker scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help the Seawolves (10-4, 7-1 Yankee Small College) beat the Saints (4-3, 4-3) at Rutland, Vt.


BATES 64, MIDDLEBURY 61: Graham Safford made a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to lift the Bobcats (8-4, 1-0 NESCAC) over the Panthers (6-5, 0-1) at Middlebury, Vt.

Safford finished with 18 points, and Malcolm Delpeche added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Bobcats, who trailed by as many as 15 points.

COLBY 75, WESLEYAN 69: Connor O’Neil was 5 of 8 from 3-point range and finished with 17 points to help the Mules (7-4, 1-0 NESCAC) defeat the Cardinals (6-6, 0-1) at Waterville.

Colby closed the game with a 13-0 run over the final 3:34. The Mules took the lead with 1:14 left on a 3-pointer by Ryan Jann, who also scored 17 points.

Chris Hudnut chipped in with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

BOWDOIN 64, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 47: Keegan Pieri and Matt Palecki scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, to pace the Polar Bears (11-0, 1-0 NESCAC) past the Camels (6-5, 0-1) at Brunswick.

Lucas Hausman added 11 points for the Polar Bears, who built a 32-19 halftime lead and led by as many as 20 points in the second half.

SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 105, ST. JOSEPH’S (VT.) 95: Jose Nouchanthavong scored nine of his 26 points in overtime, and finished with 10 assists and eight rebounds as the Seawolves (13-3, 7-1 Yankee Small College) downed the Saints (7-8, 3-4) at Rutland, Vt.

Davis Nicholson poured in 28 points for the Seawolves, who also got 18 points and eight rebounds from Alexander Hartford.


BOWDOIN 7, HAMILTON 3: Colin Downey scored three goals for the Polar Bears (7-3-2, 3-3-1 NESCAC) in a win over the Continentals (3-6-1, 2-4-1) at Brunswick.

COLBY 5, AMHERST 2: Tyler Lingel scored a pair of goals for the Mules (6-4-3, 3-3-1 NESCAC) in a win over the Lord Jeffs (7-4, 5-2) at Waterville.

Devin Albert and Ben Chwick each added a goal and an assist, and Aaron Deutsch collected a pair of assists.

NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 6, SOUTHERN MAINE 4: Kyle Manlow scored a pair of goals for the Pilgrims (9-4, 5-3 ECAC East) in a win over the Huskies (4-7-3, 3-5) at Henniker, N.H.

Zach Dymock, Alex Pompeo, Sam Blanchet and Pier-Michel Lapointe scored for USM.
