GORHAM — Winning pitcher Chris Bernard went 3 for 4 at the plate and drove in three runs to lead the University of Southern Maine baseball team to an impressive 10-3 triumph over Husson University.

Southern Maine improves to 16-6 while Husson drops to 10-9.

Bernard hit a leadoff homer in the second inning. After having his foul ball dropped in the third inning, Paul McDonough also belted a leadoff homer. The Huskies rallied for six runs in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead.

Bernard lasted five innings, giving up six hits, one earned run and striking out three.

SOFTBALL

USM SWEEPS HUSSON: Stefanie Stockwell struck out eight during a 5-3 win in the first game and Desiree Benner fanned six for a 5-4 win in the second game as USM (9-12) defeated Husson (12-6) in a doubleheader at Gorham.

Danni Humphrey hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie in game one.

Rachel Edson gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI grounder. Husson tied the game in the fourth and took a two-run lead in the fifth. USM tied it in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Allison Pillar and an RBI single from Amanda Hendrickson.

In game two, Benner gave up four runs in the top of the first, then blanked Husson. 

UNE SWEEPS RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE: Senior Amanda Vaudreuil collected six hits, including three doubles, and four RBI as the University of New England swept Rhode Island College 4-0 and 9-7 at Biddeford.

The Nor’easters have won eight of their last nine and improved to 17-9. RIC slips to 8-16.

First-year pitcher Katelyn Austin struck out four while pitching a shutout in the first game. Lauren Doneski fanned five in the nightcap.

LACROSSE

ST. JOSEPH’S 17, ST. JOSEPH’S (CONN.) 9: St. Joseph’s College (7-6, 6-1 GNAC) got three goals apiece from Kat Gadbois, Cassie Diplock and Anneka Adams to defeat the Unversity of St. Joseph’s (3-6, 2-4), at West Hartford, Conn.

HOCKEY

UNION 5, BOSTON COLLEGE 4: Daniel Ciampini broke a third-period tie with the second of his three goals to help the Dutchmen beat the Eagles in the NCAA semifinals in Philadelphia to advance to Saturday’s final against Minnesota, which won a last-second 2-1 thriller over North Dakota.

FOOTBALL

UNLV: The Rebels won’t be eligible for the Mountain West championship game or a bowl berth in 2014 after failing to reach the minimum Academic Progress Rate score. 

MISSOURI: A police investigation of a suspected burglary involving suspended Missouri wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham has been closed without an arrest, primarily because of reluctant witnesses.
