ORONO — Sam Balzano and Troy Black each had two hits, Brian Doran scored three times and the University of Maine used a pair of three-run innings Tuesday to down Thomas 10-2 in a nonconference baseball game.

Nick Bernardo hit an RBI triple, and Shane Bussey and Colin Gay each singled in a run in the third.

The Black Bears (10-19) went ahead 6-1 in the fifth when Black tripled and scored on a wild pitch, Alex Calbick advanced home on a balk and Jake Osborne singled in Doran.

Garrett Emery had three hits for Thomas (4-12).

MEN’S LACROSSE

COLBY 11, BOWDOIN 7: John Grimaldi scored seven goals and Tyler Will made 19 saves for the Mules (6-5, 3-4 NESCAC) against the Polar Bears (9-3, 6-2) at Brunswick.

Leading 7-5 after three quarters, the Mules scored four consecutive goals in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, including two by Grimaldi, and one each from Alex Rutan and Austin Sayer.

David Nemirov had two goals, Will Wise added a goal and two assists, and Connor Laughlin made 10 saves for Bowdoin.

CASTLETON STATE 8, SOUTHERN MAINE 5: Alex Denny, Nikolas Rancourt and Louis Alhage each had two goals, and the Spartans (7-4) opened with four straight goals against the Huskies (2-8) at Gorham.

Seth Wing had two goals, Keegan Smith, Dylan Kenney and Ryan Poag also scored, and Ryan Jurgelevich made 11 saves for the Huskies.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

COLBY 11, BOWDOIN 10: Lindsey McKenna scored five goals, including the winner in the final minute, as the Mules (6-4, 4-3 NESCAC) edged the Polar Bears (5-5, 3-5) at Waterville.

McKenna one-timed a pass from Alex Mintz with 35 seconds left and Colby ran out the clock after winning the next draw.

Lindsay McCabe finished with two goals for Colby. Betsy Sachs had four goals for Bowdoin.

EMMANUEL 15, ST. JOSEPH’S 14: Sarah Higgins scored the winner on her fifth goal of the game with 41 seconds left in the second overtime as the Saints (9-2, 8-0 GNAC) topped the Monks (6-6, 6-1) at Portland.

Kelsey Dumond scored the last goal of regulation for the Monks, who rallied 7-3 in the second half to make it 12-12.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

NORTH DAKOTA STATE: The school stayed in house for its men’s basketball opening, promoting David Richman to head coach.

MARYLAND: Three players were granted requests to transfer: center Shaquille Cleare, and guards Nick Faust and Roddy Peters.

IOWA: Reserves Kyle Meyer and Darius Stokes are leaving the program.

OREGON: Point guard Joseph Young said he’s returning for his senior season.

APPALACHIAN STATE: The school hired Davidson assistant Jim Fox as coach.

Royce Waltman, an assistant to Bob Knight at Indiana and a longtime coach around the state, died Monday night after a long illness. He was 72.
