ORONO — The University of Maine men’s basketball team will try to rebound from a 6-23 season without two of its top three scorers.

Xavier Pollard, a junior guard, announced this week that he plans to transfer. Pollard led the team with 14.7 points per game this winter and was named third-team All-America East.

Last month, sophomore guard Dimitry Coronel was granted his transfer release. Coronel averaged 10.4 points per game. The Black Bears had no seniors last season.

Coach Ted Woodward has two years remaining on his contract. He’s been at Maine for 10 seasons. 

MASSACHUSETTS: Guard Derrick Gordon became the first openly gay player in Division I men’s basketball, making the announcement in interviews with ESPN and the media company Outsports. 

WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE: The NCAA banned the men’s basketball team from postseason play next season for failing to meet academic standards.

FOOTBALL

MAINE: Spring practices begin Thursday for a team coming off a 10-3 season and the first home playoff game in school history. Maine must replace key seniors, including quarterback Marcus Wasilewski.

Maine will have 12 practices and three scrimmages, all open to the public. The scrimmages are set for 9:45 a.m. April 19 and 26, and conclude with the annual Jeff Cole memorial scrimmage at 10 a.m. May 3.

BASEBALL

BOWDOIN 11, ST. JOSEPH’S 6: Aaron Rosen had four hits with three runs for Bowdoin (12-6-1), which totaled seven runs over the middle innings and beat St. Joseph’s (13-7) at Standish.

Chris Martin hit a two-run double in the fourth when Bowdoin scored three times. Cole DiRober hit a run-scoring single in the fifth, and the Polar Bears added three in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk and a two-run error.

Peter Cimini finished with two hits with three RBI and two runs for Bowdoin. Cejay Suarez had two hits, and Taylor Black and Brett Barbati each drove in a run for the Monks.

Each team committed five errors, including four by Rosen. 

SOUTHERN MAINE 12, COLBY 1: Paul McDonough finished with four hits, three RBI and two runs, and the Huskies (15-6) had four multiple-run innings against the Mules (10-5) at Gorham.

McDonough hit an RBI single in the four-run second inning, singled and scored in the three-run fourth, and drove in two on a triple in the seventh when the Huskies got their final three runs.

The Huskies also scored two in the third on a single by Paul Verrier and an error.

Verrier finished with two RBI, and Chris Bernard had two hits with two RBI and two runs.

NORTHERN ESSEX C.C. 11, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C 4: The Knights went ahead for good with three runs in the sixth inning against the Seawolves (8-16) at South Portland.

Ethan Bilderback and Zachary Horton hit consecutive doubles, and Jon Daniszewski followed with a single to score Horton in the first for the Seawolves. In the seventh, Alex Brown tripled and scored on a single by Bilderback, who scored on an error.

MEN’S LACROSSE

MOUNT IDA 6, ST. JOSEPH’S 5: Wyatt Sullivan had three goals as the Mustangs (8-5, 5-2 GNAC) edged the Monks (4-6, 3-4) at Newton, Mass.

Jake Ricciardi and Dalton Eldridge each scored twice for the Monks.

SOUTHERN MAINE 24, UM-FARMINGTON 4: Shelby Turcotte, Sarah Pelligrinelli, Rosie Forster, Sam Campobasso and Jenna Cyr each had three goals as the Huskies (3-5) routed the Beavers (2-7) at Gorham.

The Huskies scored in nearly every minute of the first 10 minutes for a 9-0 lead, then expanded it to 16-2 by halftime.

Jaclyn Langevin had two goals for Farmington. 

GORDON 15, UNE 6: Jessica Castelline had four goals, and Kelly Linehan and Bailey Grinnell each added three as the Fighting Scots (9-3, 4-1 Commonwealth Coast) handled the Nor’easters (6-6, 1-3) at Biddeford.

Gordon closed the first half with seven consecutive goals for a 10-4 lead.

Gina Newsome had two goals and Courtney Kendall made 12 saves for UNE.

SOFTBALL

UNE SWEEPS NICHOLS: The Nor’easters (14-9, 6-3 Commonwealth Coast) won the opener 8-5, then took the second 11-3 in five innings at Biddeford.

Lauren Doneski struck out 11, Kelly Murphy had two hits with an RBI and two runs, and UNE took advantage of six errors in the opener.

In the second game, Abby Lambert hit a two-run triple in a four-run first, and Allie Frazier a two-run homer during a five-run fifth as UNE scored all of its runs in the first three innings.
