STANDISH — Alex Lorenc drove in the go-ahead run with a two-run double in the fourth inning and second-seeded St. Joseph’s scored nine unanswered runs to down third-seeded Lasell 9-2 in the quarterfinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball tournament Thursday at Mahaney Diamond.

After giving up a pair of first- inning runs, Nick Whittaker of St. Joseph’s (21-12) pitched eight strong innings, scattering nine hits, striking out nine and walking two. Corey McNamara pitched a perfect ninth.

The Monks got one run back on an RBI single by Joe Coyne in the third and took the lead for good with a three-run fourth. They added another run in the fifth, then four in the eighth.

Lorenc finished with two hits and scored twice, and Brett Barbati went 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI and a run to pace a 15-hit offense for the Monks against Lasell (18-11).

St. Joseph’s will be home against top-seeded Suffolk at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

ST. JOSEPH’S 7, NORWICH 5: Lizzie Calnan scored the go-ahead goal with 5:41 left and added another just over three minutes later for the second-seeded Monks (12-7), who scored five unanswered goals over the final 15 minutes to rally past the third-seeded Cadets (8-5) in a GNAC semifinal at Portland.

Calnan and Cassie Diplock finished with three goals apiece for St. Joseph’s, which will play at top-seeded Emmanuel in the final Saturday.

Kat Gadbois added one goal and two assists, and Elizabeth Giacchino finished with eight saves for the Monks.

FOOTBALL

WISCONSIN-RIVER FALLS: John O’Grady, the former head coach of a Wisconsin school placed on probation for a year by the NCAA, said he should have been more cautious after the organization made changes to rules about distribution of financial aid.

The NCAA said Division III Wisconsin-River Falls failed to monitor the scholarship process. The school has said the self-reported violations were unintentional.

MISSISSIPPI STATE: Charles Siddoway, a former Mississippi State offensive lineman, and Jordan Washington, a current defensive lineman, were arrested on Wednesday in Starkville, Miss., and charged with burglary and robbery.

The Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the arrests. Lt. Brett Watson said the pair had an initial court appearance and bond was set at $20,000.

IOWA STATE: Defensive tackle Brandon Jensen rejoined the Cyclones after quitting the team following the conclusion of last season.

Jensen, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound native of Ankeny, Iowa, started all 12 games at nose guard for Iowa State in 2013. Jensen has played 36 career games for the Cyclones and should immediately reclaim his starting spot.

NEW MEXICO: A judge is allowing running back Crusoe Gongbay to return home to Maryland once the semester ends in May before returning to Albuquerque, N.M., to face rape and kidnapping charges.

Gongbay, 20, from Rockville, Md., was arrested Monday after turning himself in. He had an initial appearance Wednesday in Metropolitan Court.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

XAVIER: Dez Wells, a former Xavier University basketball player, settled his lawsuit against the school over its handling of what he said was a false rape allegation.

Federal Judge S. Arthur Spiegel dismissed Wells’ lawsuit, saying the two had resolved their conflict. Settlement terms weren’t released.

MARSHALL: The school hired Los Angeles Lakers assistant Dan D’Antoni, the oldest brother of Lakers Coach Mike D’Antoni, as its coach.

D’Antoni, 66, replaced Tom Herrion, who resigned last month after an 11-22 season.

NEBRASKA: Moses Abraham Ayegba of Georgetown signed transfer papers to play at Nebraska for one season.

Ayegba will graduate from Georgetown with a degree in economics next month and be eligible to play for the Cornhuskers in 2014-15.

OKLAHOMA STATE: The school announced the deaths of two former standout basketball players – 83-year-old Don Johnson and 90-year-old Weldon Kern both died Monday. The causes of the deaths weren’t released.

Johnson played for Coach Henry Iba at what was then Oklahoma A&M from 1949-51 and was named All-American after the 1951 season. Kern played for Iba in 1945-46 and was a starter on back-to-back national championship teams for Oklahoma A&M.

n Oklahoma’s criminal appeals court overturned the conviction for Darrell Williams, a former Oklahoma State basketball player, accused of sexually assaulting two women at an off-campus party in 2010.

CONNECTICUT: Center Amida Brimah has surgery scheduled to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder and is expected to be sidelined for up to five months.

The 7-foot freshman from Ghana will undergo arthroscopic surgery Friday.

ARKANSAS: Seminole State College point guard Jabril Durham signed a letter of intent to join the program for the upcoming season.

Durham, who is a native of Dallas, will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Razorbacks.
