LEWISTON — Nicholas Jobin and Matt Medeiros scored 21 points each Tuesday night to pace St. Joseph’s to a season-opening 82-77 men’s basketball win over Bates College.

The Bobcats (2-1) tied the game with 2:02 left on a three-point basket from Graham Safford, but Jobin put the Monks ahead for good with a three-point play after being fouled on a layup. After Safford and Medeiros traded layups, Steve Simonds stretched the lead by hitting four free throws in the final 13 seconds.

Simonds finished with 19 points. Safford led all scorers with 28, while Mike Boornazian helped the Bobcats with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

COLBY 69, UM-FARMINGTON 58: Ryan Jann scored 15 points and collected 11 rebounds as Colby (2-1) won at Waterville.

Jann scored 11 points in the second half. He also blocked two shots and had two steals in the game.

The Beavers (1-2) cut the lead to 59-56 with 4:06 to play, but the Mules went on a 10-2 run down the stretch to seal the victory.

Luke Westman and Chris Hudnut scored 13 points each for Colby while Andrew Dickey scored a game-high 24 points for the Beavers.

NJIT 88, MAINE 82: Damon Lynn scored 24 points and four other New Jersey Institute of Technology players reached double figures in a win at Orono.

Dimitry Coronel was 10 of 19 from the field with a game-high 29 points to lead the Black Bears, while Shaun Lawton added 12 points and a game-high eight assists.

(2) KANSAS 86, IONA 66: Perry Ellis scored 21 points, and freshman Joel Embiid had 16 points and 13 rebounds in a breakout performance at Lawrence, Kan.

Andrew Wiggins added 13 points and Naadir Tharpe had 10 assists for the Jayhawks (3-0), who got off to a sluggish start after their high-profile triumph over Duke last week.

(3) LOUISVILLE 87, HARTFORD 48: Montrezl Harrell had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the Cardinals (4-0) to an easy win in a Hall of Fame Tipoff game at Louisville, Ky.

(4) KENTUCKY 105, UT ARLINGTON 76: James Young scored 26 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Wildcats won at home.

Young’s hot shooting rubbed off on his talented fellow freshmen teammates – Julius Randle added 22 points with 10 rebounds, Andrew Harrison 15 and Marcus Lee 10 as Kentucky started an all-rookie lineup for the second consecutive game.

(6) DUKE 83, EAST CAROLINA 74: Rodney Hood scored a career-high 30 points to help the Blue Devils in the NIT Season Tipoff at Durham, N.C.

Jabari Parker had 21 points, nine rebounds and six blocks for the Blue Devils (4-1).

(7) OKLAHOMA STATE 101, (11) MEMPHIS 80: Marcus Smart scored a career-high 39 points and Oklahoma State raced past Memphis in a one-sided matchup of top-ranked teams.

Smart, who bypassed the NBA draft after last season’s early exit from the NCAA tournament, had 26 points in the first half and finished with five 3-pointers.

FLORIDA: Tests showed no further damage to freshman point guard Kasey Hill’s badly sprained left ankle.

Coach Billy Donovan believes Hill will be sidelined at least a month.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

(8) MARYLAND 87, GEORGE WASHINGTON 51: Alyssa Thomas had 18 points and 14 rebounds, and the Terrapins never trailed in a rout of poor-shooting George Washington at College Park, Md.

Coming off a disappointing 17-point defeat at home against UConn, the Terrapins (3-1) dominated the first meeting between these crosstown schools since 2006.

BOWDOIN 67, ENDICOTT 56: Shannon Brady scored 25 points as Bowdoin improved to 3-0 with a win at Brunswick.

The Polar Bears ran away from a 33-33 tie in the second half with a 16-0 run.

Brady contributed eight points in the run and Kirsten Prue canned two 3-point baskets over a one-minute span, giving Bowdoin a 49-33 lead with 14:43 left in the half.

Megan Phelps also scored in double figures for Bowdoin with 11.

MEN’S HOCKEY

COLBY 5, USM 2: Colby goaltender Sam Parker held up his end with 41 saves on 43 shots as Colby (1-1-1) downed the University of Southern Maine (2-3) at Waterville.

The Huskies outshot the Mules 43-26, and opened with a Stephen Gallo goal 7:24 into the contest.

USM, however, then went scoreless until a third-period power-play goal by Cole Klippenstein.

Brendan Cosgrove provided the go-ahead goal for the Mules with a short-handed effort at 6:11 of the second period. Colin Reilly added a goal seven minutes later and Ray Zeek scored three minutes into the third to give Colby a 4-1 lead.

FOOTBALL

UCLA: Offensive lineman Torian White has been suspended indefinitely after his arrest on suspicion of sexual assault. UCLA confirmed White was arrested early Sunday morning at an apartment complex near campus.

Coach Jim Mora said the team takes the accusations “very seriously.”
