BIDDEFORD — Allie Frazier hit a two-run single down the left side in the seventh inning Wednesday to give the University of New England a 3-2 victory against Bowdoin and a split of their non-conference softball doubleheader.

The Polar Bears won the first game, 6-0.

Melissa DellaTorre of Bowdoin (19-11) struck out eight, walked one and allowed five hits in the shutout. Marissa O’Toole drove in the winning run with a single in the third. Alana Luzzio finished with two hits, two runs and an RBI.

In the second game, Dimitria Spathakis hit an RBI double in the fourth and a two-out RBI single in the sixth.

Amanda Vaudreuil scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth to pull the Nor’easters (23-15) within 2-1.

Katelyn Austin of UNE struck out four, walked two and allowed two earned runs on seven hits.

HUSSON SWEEPS BATES: Kayla Merrill had five hits, six RBI and scored four runs to lead the Eagles (21-9) to a pair of victories over Bates (8-17) at Bangor, 11-6 and 5-3.

Husson broke a 6-6 first-game tie with a five-run sixth inning highlighted by Sami Schultz’s homer and Allison Hill’s two-run double. In the second game, Merrill and Hill stroked RBI singles as Husson broke a 3-3 tie, also in the sixth.

COLBY SWEEPS UM-FARMINGTON: Megan Michie picked up two wins, one as a starter and another in relief, as Colby (7-16) defeated the University of Maine-Farmington 7-2 and 5-4 in a doubleheader at Waterville.

Michie allowed one earned run, struck out six and walked two in the opener. The Mules scored all seven runs in the fifth inning to rally from a 2-0 deficit.

In the second game, the Mules trailed 4-0 before scoring five in the sixth.

The rally started when Katherine Zafirson reached on an error. Emily Schatz had an RBI single, Meaghan Lewia drove in two with a double and Carylanne Wolfington knocked in two more with a single.

BASEBALL

BABSON 6, USM 4: Sean MacPhee drove in the go-ahead run with a two-run single in a five-run eighth inning as Babson (18-13) rallied past USM (24-8) at Gorham.

The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Sam Dexter, who later scored on a throwing error. Babson got one back in the sixth, but Southern Maine put another run across in the seventh on Matt Bender’s sacrifice fly.

In Babson’s eighth, Owen Shea provided an RBI single and scored on a squeeze by Rob Caggiano. MacPhee scored the final run on a wild pitch.

USM loaded the bases in the ninth and got one run when Nick DiBiase grounded to third, allowing Chris Bernard to score.

BATES SWEEPS HUSSON: Ryan McCarthy went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI to help Bates (16-11) complete a doubleheder sweep of Husson (18-13) with 7-2 and 9-4 victories at Bangor.

Bates scored five runs in the fourth inning of the opener to break a 2-2 tie. Conor Reenstierna started the rally with an RBI double to left. Sam Warren wrapped it up with a two-run double to center.

Warren came through in the second game with an RBI double in the third that gave the Bobcats a 4-0 lead. McCarthy added a two-run double in the fifth and Bates took an 8-3 lead in the sixth after Reenstierna scored on a passed ball and Warren stole home.

MEN’S LACROSSE

COLBY 12, BATES 9: Austin Sayre scored three times as the Mules (7-7, 4-6 NESCAC) notched the final six goals to beat Bates (4-9, 1-9) in Waterville.

Jack Strain’s goal with 2:44 left in the third quarter put the Bobcats ahead 9-6. But Sayre scored twice before Mark Philipps tied the game with a minute left in the quarter. Derek Youngman, Garen Fabian and Sayre added fourth-period goals.

Sayre finished with six goals and an assist; Youngman added three goals. Jack Allard scored three goals for Bates.

WENTWORTH 12, UNE 10: Wentworth (7-8, 4-4 Commonwealth Coast) outscored Nor’Easters (5-12, 2-6) 3-1 in the fourth quarter to win a regular-season finale at Boston.

Wentworth claimed the final playoff spot in the league tournament. UNE didn’t qualify.

Steve Glover scored five goals for the Leopards, including the go-ahead goal. Nick Gross and Patrick Wolfe scored three goals each for UNE.

Glover gave Wentworth the lead for good 2:23 into the final quarter with an unassisted score. Steve Farmer and Ryan Coakley added goals, giving the Leopards a 12-9 lead. Sam Cloutier got the final goal for the Nor’easters with 4:27 left.

BECKER 9, ST. JOSEPH’S 5: Becker (12-4) knocked St. Joseph’s (6-8) out of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference playoffs with a quarterfinal win at Leicester, Mass.

After a scoreless first quarter, Andrew Sullivan gave the Monks the lead with four minutes left in the second. Becker tied it before halftime when Ryen Kearney sent a pass to David Deschenes, who converted it for his 43rd goal of the season.

The Hawks led 4-3 after three quarters, then added five goals in the fourth to make it 9-3. Sullivan and Brandon Boutin added late goals for the Monks.

Sullivan finished with three goals. Ethan Rettew finished with 14 saves for the Monks, while Jeffrey Candee had eight for the Hawks.

TUFTS 18, BOWDOIN 11: Chris Schoenhut scored five goals to lead the Jumbos (13-2, 9-1 NESCAC) over Bowdoin (9-6, 6-4) at Medford, Mass.

John Uppgren, Peter Gill and Peter Bowers added two goals each for Tufts. Franklin Reis had goals, and Peter Reuter and Conor O’Toole also scored for the Polar Bears.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

COLBY 10, BATES 6: Abby Hatch scored three goals, and Katharine Eddy and Lindsey McKenna added two each to pace Colby (8-5, 6-4 NESCAC) against the Bobcats (8-7, 4-6) at Lewiston.

Hatch scored twice in the first half, helping the Mules to a 4-1 lead.

Blair Shrewsbury had two goals and two assists for Bates.

PLYMOUTH STATE 17, USM 6: Plymouth State (8-4, 3-2 Little East) finished the first half with five unanswered goals over the final eight minutes and beat USM (5-8, 1-3) at Gorham.

The Panthers added a 5-1 run in the second half for a 13-4 lead with 16:09 remaining.

Shannon Connerty, Caroline Vonachen and Kaitlyn Wilder scored four goals apiece for Plymouth. Rosie Forster paced the Huskies with two goals; Shelby Turcotte, Sam Campobasso, Laura Fay and Jenna Cyr had one each.

UNE 19, WENTWORTH 3: Hanna Warren had four goals and two assists to help the University of New England (9-7, 4-4 Commonwealth Coast) rout Wentworth (3-12, 0-8) at Boston.

The Nor’easters built an early 7-0 lead with three goals from Warrren. Gina Newsome had three goals, and Nikki Smith, Jessica Deedon and Katie Cawley scored two each for UNE.

Pam Mudge had two of Wentworth’s three goals.

Warren converted on three free-position attempts in the first seven minutes to help UNE jump ahead early. The Nor’easter led 14-2 at halftime.

TUFTS 10, BOWDOIN 9: Eliza Halmo scored with six seconds remaining, giving Tufts (10-5, 6-4 NESCAC) a victory against the Polar Bears (8-6, 4-6) in Brunswick.

After Lindsay Picard of Bowdoin drove to the goal to make it 9-9 with 1:51 remaining, the Jumbos won the ensuing draw control and controlled the ball for the next 1:30. Halmo then carried the ball on the left side and sliced through the defense, taking a low shot while falling for the winning goal.

Caroline Ross led Tufts with four goals and an assist. Picard, Betsy Sachs and Taylor Wilson each had three goals for Bowdoin.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

KENTUCKY: Kentucky’s frontcourt will bring back size and experience next season after freshman center Dakari Johnson and sophomore forward Alex Poythress announced they would return.

TULSA: Dave Leitao, a former coach of the Maine Red Claws, was one of the three assisant coaches hired by Frank Haith, the school’s new head coach.

Tom Abatemarco and Dennis Felton also were added to the staff.
