BIDDEFORD — Lauren Doneski and Abby Lambert combined on a four-hit shutout for the University of New England in the first game, and Sydney Helmbrecht’s RBI single capped a decisive five-run rally in the second to give the Nor’easters (12-8) a 3-0 and 7-4 softball sweep of Bates (2-8).

Doneski pitched the first 42/3 innings, yielding two hits and striking out six.

Amanda Vaudreuil scored for UNE in the first, trotting home on Ali Stanley’s bases-loaded walk. Vaudreuil tripled home another run in the second and drove home the third run with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly. Vandreuil finished with three hits while teammate Allie Frazier added two hits and scored twice. Kelsey Freedman had two hits for the Bobcats.

Bates took an early 2-0 lead in the second game on Alayna Garbarino’s two-run single. Helmbrecht’s RBI infield single pulled UNE within one in the top of the second, only to have Freedman single home Brenna Callahan in the bottom of the inning for a 3-1 Bobcats lead.

The Nor’easters took control with five runs in the third.

BASEBALL

BRIDGTON ACADEMY 3, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 0: The Wolverines (1-0) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth, scoring a run off Seawolves starter Andrew Rascoe. Bridgton pulled away with two more in the fifth to beat SMCC (8-3) in South Portland.

MEN’S LACROSSE

BOWDOIN 11, BATES 10: Tyler Williams scored the tying and winning goals as the Polar Bears (8-2, 5-1 NESCAC) notched the only three goals of the fourth period to bypass Bates (4-5, 1-5) in Lewiston.

After Franklin Reis brought Bowdoin within 10-9 three minutes into the fourth quarter, Williams intercepted a clearing pass and tied the game on an unassisted goal with 10:36 left. Williams notched the winner with 2:07 left, again scoring an unassisted goal. 

BECKER 3, ST. JOSEPH’S 2: Myles White scored his second goal of the game late in the third quarter to give Becker (7-2) a win over the Monks (4-3) in Portland.

St. Joseph’s, after falling behind 1-0 on White’s first goal, took a 2-1 lead on a pair of unassisted goals by Jake Ricciardi late in the opening period. Matt Matson tied the game just before the half for the Hawks.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

BOWDOIN 6, BATES 5: Dana White’s go-ahead goal midway through overtime proved decisive as Bowdoin (4-4, 2-4 NESCAC) edged the Bobcats (7-4, 3-3) in Brunswick.

Betsy Sachs’ three goals and one assist led the Polar Bears. Bridget Meedzan and Moriah Greenstein each tallied twice for Bates.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

GEORGIA COACH Mark Fox was given a two-year contract extension following a 20-14 season that improved his five-year mark to 85-77. 

WASHINGTON STATE’S new coach Ernie Kent signed a five-year contract that will pay him a guaranteed $1.4 million a year and incentives.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SANFORD’S CHINEY OGWUMIKE and Baylor’s Odyssey Sims are among the finalists for the John R. Wooden Award, given to college basketball’s top female player.

Ogwumike, a senior forward, has led Stanford to the Final Four. Sims helped Baylor reach the Elite Eight.

Other candidates are Kayla McBride of Notre Dame, Breanna Stewart of Connecticut and Alyssa Thomas of Maryland. The trio will take their teams to the Final Four this weekend in Nashville, Tenn.

MEN’S HOCKEY

ST. LAWRENCE senior forward Greg Carey, St. Cloud State senior forward Nic Dowd and Boston College junior forward Johnny Gaudreau have been chosen as finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award given to the top player in college hockey.

The winner will be revealed April 11 in Philadelphia, the site of this year’s NCAA Frozen Four.
