Corkum served five years as associate head coach under the man he replaces, Tim Whitehead, who was fired Tuesday after 12 seasons.

"Bob Corkum was a great Black Bear and NHL player," said Athletic Director Steve Abbott in a statement. "He did a terrific job as an associate head coach and I am confident that he can give us stability during this time of transition."

Abbott said he's forming a search committee to find a permanent coach.

Corkum played for Maine from 1985-89, and participated in Frozen Four appearances in 1988 and 1989, and an NCAA tournament in 1987. He was named Maine's most inspirational player in 1988 and a captain for the 1988-89 season.

He went on to a 12-year career in the National Hockey League with stops in Buffalo, Atlanta, New Jersey, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Philadelphia and Anaheim. His coaching career included jobs at two high schools before moving into the ranks of junior hockey, with the Portland Junior Pirates and New Hampshire Monarchs. He has spent the past two summers coaching USA Hockey, serving as assistant coach of the 2012 U.S. under-18 team that played in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

"I have fond memories of my time here as a player and a coach," Corkum said in the statement. "My mission as coach is to give our student-athletes the same experience I had during my four years here at the University of Maine."
