BANGOR — Hannah Shaw scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as third-seeded Mt. Desert Island upset No. 1 Presque Isle 63-51 to win the Eastern Class B girls’ basketball championship Saturday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center.
The Trojans (19-2) grabbed the lead for good with a 19-6 run in the first half as they snapped Presque Isle’s 64-game winning streak. The Wildcats (20-1) were the two-time defending state champions.
Kelsey Shaw added 13 points and nine rebounds, and Sarah Phelps scored 13 points for MDI, which won its first Eastern Maine title since 2003. The Trojans will face Lake Region in the state final Friday in Bangor.
Taylor Williams scored 16 points for Presque Isle, and Hannah Graham got all of her 13 points in the second half as the Wildcats nearly erased a 16-point deficit. A 12-0 run in the fourth quarter sliced MDI’s lead to 51-47 before a three-point play by Kesley Shaw helped the Trojans regain control.
EASTERN CLASS B BOYS
OLD TOWN 43, CARIBOU 41: Garvey Melmud scored Old Town’s last eight points, including a tying 3-pointer with 20 seconds left in regulation and two tiebreaking free throws with 22.6 seconds remaining in overtime, as the sixth-seeded Coyotes (17-5) beat No. 4 Caribou (17-5) for their first regional title in 23 years.
Melmud finished with 12 points and Adam Richardson had 13 for Old Town.
Caribou got 11 points from Cody Herbert and 10 from Dayne Savage.
EASTERN CLASS D GIRLS
WASHBURN 74, VAN BUREN 51: The fourth-seeded Beavers (20-2) took control with a 20-2 run in the first quarter and rolled over the second-seeded Crusaders (17-5) for their fourth straight regional championship.
Nicole Olson made four 3-pointers and scored 14 points in the first quarter as Washburn raced to a 24-6 lead. Van Buren never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
Olson finished with 17 points. Carsyn Koch had 19 points and eight rebounds, Mackenzie Worcester contributed 18 points and seven assists, and Carmen Bragg had eight points and six assists.
Parise Rossignol had 21 points and nine rebounds for Van Buren. She set a Class D tournament record with 89 points.
EASTERN CLASS D BOYS
HODGDON 49, SOUTHERN AROOSTOOK 37: Chris Hudson scored 25 points to lead the third-seeded Hawks (19-3) past the fifth-seeded Warriors (15-7) in the regional final.
Devin Quint added 10 points for Hodgdon, which led by as many as 19 points in the second half. The Hawks will seek their first state championship in 18 years when they face Valley on Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center.
Cameron Landry paced Southern Aroostook with 18 points.
