BIDDEFORD — Seventh-seeded Biddeford advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class A volleyball tournament Thursday with a straight-set victory against 10th-ranked Cheverus.

The scores were 26-24, 25-21 and 25-21.

Bailey Cote served seven aces for Biddeford (8-7) against the Stags (6-9), with 13 kills and 11 digs. Jocelyn Moody added 20 kills and four digs.

FIELD HOCKEY

LAWRENCE 1, OXFORD HILLS 0: Fourth-seeded Lawrence (9-5-1) recovered from a poor end to the regular season — four losses and a tie in its final five games — to hold fifth-ranked Oxford Hills (9-6) to one shot in an Eastern Class A quarterfinal at Fairfield.

“We came out here pretty ready,” said Julia Lawrence, who scored off a pass from Crystal Crowell. “We had been training very well on our practices, and practicing a lot. We had to come out positive and that was about it.”

“I’m very proud of my team,” Lawrence Coach Lisa Larrabee said. “I thought we played with a lot of heart, a lot of hustle.”

Lawrence will face top-ranked Skowhegan (15-0) in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Saturday, at Thomas College.

The Bulldogs had the overwhelming advantage in shots (17-1) and penalty corners (11-2). They spent most of the game in their offensive half of the field.

On their sixth penalty corner of the game, the Bulldogs came through. Oddly enough the goal came on a busted play. The insertion pass went past the intended receiver, but Crowell backed up the play and sent a pass into the circle. Lawrence was there to sweep it in with 4:11 left in the first half.

“Crystal had a really nice hit,” Lawrence said, “and I kind of just picked my stick up and it went in. It bounced off the side of her pads.”

The Vikings got their one shot on an attempt by Tayla Semdberg with 2:35 left in the half, then took their lumps in a couple of scary moments after the break. Haley Wakefield had her head snapped back by a drive that was meant to go downfield. Later in the half, Jesse Murch took a stick to the face and appeared to lose a tooth.

Lawrence had another shot go just wide with about five minutes left, and Dominique Lewis also barely missed on a tip-in. Oxford Hills got the ball into the circle twice in the final 15 minutes and both times Emily McLean drove the ball out.

NOKOMIS 2, CAMDEN HILLS 1: After 35 penalty corners, and chance after chance lost, Taylor Shaw scored with 3:12 left in the second overtime, lifting the top-ranked Warriors (15-0) over eighth-seeded Camden Hills (5-10) in an Eastern Class B quarterfinal at Newport.

Shaw carried the ball into the Camden Hills zone, scoring with a quick shot to the right of keeper Desi Dodd.

Nokomis will be home against fifth-ranked Belfast (8-7) in a semifinal Saturday.

The goal was just the second of the season for Shaw, who also scored in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship game.

“We knew the quarters are always really hard. (Camden Hills) had nothing to lose,” Shaw said. “I was tired. I was exhausted. I didn’t want to go into penalty corners. I was looking just to push (the shot).”

Dodd, who missed the Windjammers’ regular-season game against Nokomis, made 13 saves, a number of those coming on the Warriors’ penalty corner opportunities.

“I heard from a lot of coaches that our defense was one of the best they’ve seen, and today kind of proved it,” Camden Hills Coach Lindsey Clement said.

MT. VIEW 2, DEXTER 1: Fourth-ranked Mt. View (11-4) scored twice in 2:29 in the second half to beat fifth-seeded Dexter (10-4-1) in an Eastern Class C quarterfinal at Thorndike.

Reanna Boulay and Braley Leadbetter scored for Mt. View, which will play a semifinal at 11 a.m. Saturday at top-ranked Foxcroft Academy, which is 14-0-1 and hasn’t allowed a goal.

Dexter scored after 4:54 on a goal by Peyton Watson from Katie Hall. That 1-0 lead stood up at halftime as the Tigers had two defensive saves in the half.

“I think we played well in the first half, too,” Mt. View Coach Gloria Hewett said. “We just didn’t score.”
