The Maine Principals’ Association has proposed continuing to play three state championship football games at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland as has been the custom, with the fourth state title game to be played Friday night at the University of Maine at Orono.

Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland will continue to host three of the four state football championship games, while UMaine would host the fourth, under a proposal by the Maine Principals' Association. Here, the Foxcroft Academy Ponies celebrate after winning the Class C state title last year.

With the MPA approving four football classes earlier this year, two championships sites were needed.

The proposal would have the Class A game staying in Portland, with the other three classes rotating at UMaine.

The MPA football committee will vote on the proposal Aug. 6.

“This would maintain the three state championship games at Fitzpatrick which have proven to be a success,” said Mike Burnham, assistant executive director of the MPA.

“The Class A game will stay in Portland because of the location of the Class A schools,” he said.

The state championship games are played on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This year state championship Saturday will be Nov. 23.

Burnham said the University of Maine was very receptive to serving as a state championship site.

“We've talked about rotation with the three classes at the University of Maine,” said Todd Livingston, chairman of the football committee and the South Portland High athletic director.

“That seems to make sense and is consistent with other sports rotating state championship sites between East and West,” he said.

It hasn’t been decided which game, B, C or D, will be at UMaine.
