ORONO — The University of Maine ended a five-game losing streak at Alfond Arena, tying the University of Massachusetts 2-2 Friday night before a crowd of 4,231.
The Black Bears (2-9-1 overall, 1-5-1 Hockey East) led 2-1 until the Minutemen (3-4-1, 2-4-1) forced overtime on a goal by Conor Allen with just over a minute remaining in regulation.
Maine goalie Martin Ouellette finished with 29 saves, including a big one in the final minute of overtime as the Black Bears worked to kill a penalty.
The Black Bears had taken a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Mark Nemec and Jake Rutt, the latter during a 4-on-3 advantage.
It marked Maine's third power-play goal of the season, and came in the 52nd opportunity.
Maine senior captain Joey Diamond moved into first place on the school's career list for penalty minutes, taking over from Prestin Ryan, who played from 2001 to 2004. Diamond went to the box three times Friday night, with the second penalty leading to the first UMass goal.
Maine has a two-week break before returning to action Nov. 30 against Vermont.
