BANGOR — Liz Wood scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the University of Maine to a 72-42 win over Southern Maine in a women’s basketball exhibition game Monday night at the new Cross Insurance Center.

Ashleigh Roberts added 10 points for the Black Bears, who open the regular season Thursday at home against North Dakota State.

Erin McNamara finished with 12 points and Megan Pelletier had 10 for USM, which starts its season Friday against Salve Regina in the UMF Tip-Off Classic.

SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 85, HAMPSHIRE 32: Danielle McCusker scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds, and the Seawolves (3-1, 1-0 Yankee Small College) opened the game with a 20-2 run at South Portland.

Stefanie Saavedra added 14 points and six rebounds, and Nyalieb Deng finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

SMCC held Hampshire to 21-percent shooting while forcing 32 turnovers that led to 30 points for the Seawolves.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 100, HAMPSHIRE 29: Micah Welch led four players in double figures with 15 points and also grabbed six rebounds as the Seawolves (6-0, 1-0 Yankee Small College) won at South Portland.

Jose Nouchanthavong added 14 points, and Emanuel Perry and Jordan DeRosby each scored 13 for SMCC, which broke the game open with a 31-0 run early in the first half.

The Seawolves scored 59 points off 39 Hampshire turnovers.

BOWDOIN: Former Polar Bears coach Ray Bicknell died Monday at the age of 93.

Bicknell became Bowdoin’s men’s basketball coach in 1962 and had more than 200 career wins over 23 years. In seven years as women’s soccer coach, Bicknell had a record of 67-20-3 and won four straight conference championships.

Bicknell also coached tennis and lacrosse. Before moving to Bowdoin, Bicknell spent time at Portland Junior College, Deering High and Cape Elizabeth High.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

NCAA TOURNAMENT: Bowdoin (11-3-1) received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament and will face Christopher Newport (14-3-2) in a first-round game Saturday at Montclair, N.J.

If the Polar Bears win, they would play Montclair State or Colby-Sawyer in the second round on Sunday.

FIELD HOCKEY

ECAC TOURNAMENT: The University of New England (15-6) was invited to the six-team ECAC Division III New England tournament as the No. 2 seed.

The Nor’easters received a first-round bye and will play Framingham State (9-9) or Bridgewater State (15-5) in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday at Plymouth, N.H..

VOLLEYBALL

ECAC TOURNAMENT: The University of New England (14-10) was selected as the seventh seed in the eight-team ECAC Division III New England tournament and will travel to face second-seeded Western New England (22-9) in the opening round at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
