DETROIT — The Winter Classic between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings at Michigan Stadium, canceled this season due to the NHL lockout, has been rescheduled for Jan. 1 next season.
When this year’s event was canceled, the league had said it would schedule the next Winter Classic at the stadium, which holds more than 100,000 people. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman made the official announcement confirming next season’s game Sunday before the Red Wings hosted the St. Louis Blues.
Also, as originally planned, a sheet of ice will also be placed at Comerica Park, where two alumni games, American Hockey League, college, high school and youth games will be held in the two weeks leading up to New Year’s Day.
The jerseys Detroit and Toronto will wear in the Winter Classic and the ones that will be worn during the alumni games were also unveiled.
