North Yarmouth native Ben True’s bid for a third Boston Athletic Association 5K championship fell short, but not by much.

In a photo finish Saturday morning in Boston, True and defending champion Dejen Gebremeskel of Ethiopia both reached the tape in Boston Common in 13 minutes, 26 seconds but Gebremeskel was determined to be the winner.

“I tried to be the last one to make a move down the finishing stretch,” said True, who earned $4,000 for his runner-up placement. “I was just one step short.”

Gebremeskel won $7,500 for the victory and $5,000 for lowering his event record. Molly Huddle of Rhode Island also took home $7,500 for winning the women’s race, in 15:12.
